No, they were just nice to the senoir home, and decided a tower was better than a wall. The same group leader moaned about the 14 story project at 5440 Sheridan. He just spuddered out sentince fragments broken up by "ums". "We believe its um too tall; um too dense for the area; um not enough setback, um too much um traffic; um not pedestrian friendly um." It was like he was stuck in NIMBY robitic mode just muddering out the typical complaints without making any sort of argument. Never mind the fact he is representing a high-rise of 440 units, which sits next to two 40 story buildings and a 54 story building. Yet he still has the guall to call it too tall for the area.
Anyway, it passed. The design was altered to make it more square because the NIMBYS said the original triangalular design was too dramitic or some shit like that and they wanted something more "conventional". Never fear, the compromise is still very good.
The Van Buren project will have 44 units of affordable housing inside the building, and two parking spaces for eithier I-go or Zipcar. $500,000 will be donated for landscaping of the park spaces in the I-290 cloverleafs in front of the building; and another $500,000 is earmarked for landscaping if the ramps are buried within 10 years, if the ramps remain exposed that additional amount will go to the Park District general fund.
