Here is the video, this is the Calgary version. The one we saw in Regina was shorter and without the snarky comments.

His salary has actually gone up as he is now part owner of a new Moxies in town.

Overall a great story. Of the people who mentioned it to me the next day as a water cooler topic, they were also impressed. Infact a friend of mine told me that a co-worker of his was going to seriously consider relocating there.
In the Global Regina version, I found it interesting that Brooks Findlay, former Saskatchewan Roughrider and current Realtor in Regina, said he's represented six families who have moved from Alberta back to Regina in the last two months. I know this doesn't sound like a lot but just think a few years ago, this would have been unheard of.

The Lakeshore IGA which closed it's doors on Saturday, will be gutted, rebuilt and reopened as an "urban fresh" Sobeys. Great news for anyone living in that area.

"Sure, but you have to live in Regina", what a dumb comment by the anchor considering the story was about how much that family's life improved after they moved to Regina

I missed the story but I heard from a third party that the guy ended up getting a lucrative deal with Moxie's as part owner?? Unfortunately, TD Bank wont give me part ownership other than company stock and for me to obtain even 10% of the total shares outstanding, it will literally take a lifetime...

I guess its good for his family but those stories are few and far between...I just checked out a house in Regina and the property taxes are $4100 per year...The house is sellign for 259000 so the tax portion is unreal...I pay $4300 per year out here and the value is far more than 259000...If it were regina, I would be paying upwards of $12,000 property tax based on 1.5% as the regina house is going for...

Dont get me wrong, I have thought over and over what I could do in Regina but it doesnt make sense for me to move back...I have also spoken to other ex-pats and they feel the same...I wont be retiring even though I have just under $500,000 in home equity as I would be bored out of my skull and I could only have so much hotel sask brunch...$500,000 in the bank doesnt get a person as far as they think...I am 34 and plan to live another 50 years...That only comes out to be $10,000 a year using a simple calculation...$36,000 per year pre tax based on 7% return on my investment and I still need to find a place to live...

I was reading the Prairie Dog at university today, and it had an article about the Army and Navy lot. It said that, while what exactly is going there is a bit of a secret...but they had a quote from someone in the know that some aspects from that McGill project would be incorporated. So now we can speculate on which parts

^^ I think he was refering to being bored if he were to retire, not move to Regina. But I don't know why he was even considering retiring at the age of 34.. Also, the point he was trying to make about it being more expensive to live in Regina is laughable IMO

and about the Army and Navy building, that's really exciting! There was some good stuff in that McGill project!

Regina Stones Shows Set New Canadian Benchmark
January 19, 2007

Yes, the arrival of the Rolling Stones and their Bigger Bang tour to Regina last fall was a big deal. On Friday, we found out just how big.

The two concerts in October were the top grossing concerts of all time in Canada. In a news release from IPSCO Place, the two shows at Mosaic Stadium raked in $12,011,124 -- this is according to the music industry trade magazine, Pollstar. A total of 80,583 people attended the concerts.

What's more, the magazine says the two Regina shows are the only Canadian events to make the top-40 North American grossing concerts of all time.

So you pay more in property taxes in Calgary.. probably for a much smaller home than what you could have for half the mortgage you're paying in Calgary. Less taxes, much smaller mortgage and bigger home. Yeah I'd say Calgarians are getting the boot end on that deal.

Also keep in mind that oil prices are dropping like a stone.. and that equity in your home could take a drop if the Calgary economy starts to tank. Its a question which many Calgarians are considering.

You know just because you move it doesn't mean you have to retire... you just don't have to give away all your money on a big mortage for such a modest home.

Awesome news. Hopefully Regina can get a big show every year now.

The city has already said there will be a large concert every year now in September. Which is pretty damn exciting news. Great for the province, and great for the #1 city in the province!!!

University of Regina...

I am always looking at all these long range plans and stuff and they excite me

But this one I hadn't seen before and has a lot of renderings and such:

http://www.uregina.ca/presoff/vpadmin/ca...Briefing%20on%20Campus%20Development.pdf

Clearly some of those things have been done (twin towers, lab building) but the library addition, Education/Business tower, parkades, other things they have renderings of look pretty exciting! I wonder when the ground will break for the next campus building (other than the research building going up soon) and I wonder which building it will be?

I HATED the fact that the on campus hockey arena was voted down. Stupid students. That would have been sweet. Even if I am long gone when it would have been built, the university needs a rink on campus.

Don't get your hopes up

I don't see what band could possibly rake in more cash than the Stones. Perhaps The Beatles could do it if half their members weren't dead. People probably shouldn't hope to get a concert like that every year. There arn't enough big bands these days that could fill a stadium twice in three days.

Looks like Saunders is the architect for these new proposed university buildings:

http://www.saundersevans.com/indexstep.html

They're all in their portfolio: Addon to education building, library addition, and an addon to the sports complex for 3 indoor soccer pitches and a basketball court.

I wonder how many of these are going to come to fruition and how soon?

No...we won't see the stadium full for 2 days again. But one day is reasonable and would happen with a few acts.

U2, Madonna, The Eagles...all rumoured to be possibilities.

On the radio today, it sounds like U2 is the big rumour right now.

My home is larger than the one I found on MLS...Mayfield Road in Regina...Nice older style home...Overall, I pay less property taxes in calgary and less income tax in Alberta...But you are right, my mortgage would be smaller in Regina...

I am glad that the oil industry wont hurt the business I am in...In fact, if the oil prices go down, people need me more than they do when prices are high...In summer of 2005, the chief economist of the company I work for predicted that oil prices would be $55 per barrel by the end of 2006...People thought he was nuts as it was sitting around $70 a barrel...Sure enough, end of 2006 came and the price was about $56...At the time, he also predicted that by the end of 2007, oil will be $45 per barrel...

Economy in Calgary has gone away from being solely reliant on the oil patch...It might be half as reliant as it was in the 80s...

I wasnt saying that I was going to retire, its just that my buddies in Regina tell me to sell my house here, move back and then retire with the profit I have in the house...Perhaps is my wife could land a job with RBE, I could take it easier...

It is true Calgary has a somewhat more deversified economy than in the 80's, but the result of high lease rates has driven some of the non-oil companies away. Overall if the oil industry tanks in anyway I don't see Calgary coming out of it too well. It would effect the oil companies and natural gas companies.. energy support companies... construction companies... property management companies.. service companies... among mnay many other companies.

With energy prices dropping it may be time to cash out.

I may be wrong... I guess we will see.

I keep hearing this term "cash out"...it's kinda funny, but true. People selling their $500,000 Calgary homes, moving to Regina and buying a $300,000 home which is twice as big, newer, and paying cash

7 years ago...I was one of those university students who couldn't wait to finish school and move to Calgary! But now, you'd have to put a gun to my head. Regina has come so far in the last 7 years, and has SO much potential right now. I enjoy my, literally, 5-6 minute drive to university...and 6-7 minute drive to work. And I live in the eastend...so it's not like I live right beside the school or downtown. With a new baby in my world...time is tight. I am going to university, working, and have a 3 week old baby. I only get to spend a few hours a day at home with him. It would be a travesty if I had to spend those extra house in my car stuck in traffic trying to get home from work or school in Calgary. Not to mention the housing costs for a young family like myself...no way I could afford a decent house in Calgary. In Regina, it's attainable.

Regina is looking good folks.
