I worked fort G. Schirmer Music in the Penny Owsley building on Wiltshire in the mid-1960s. The Schirmer music store, where I also worked, was on Westwood Boulevard near Le Conte and went out of business in the late 1960s.
Schirmer's was a staple in Westwood Village back in the day. It's clients included the old guard of the film industry, including Nelson Eddy, Johnny Mercer, Robert Taylor, Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack, Rod Serling, Charles Bronson, Jeffrey Hunter and many more. It was a small shop with high end service. Westwood Village closed down around 5 pm, with only a few businesses staying open late, such as the theaters and a couple of restaurants. After the Free Press Bookstore and Westwood Kazoo opened in 1968, the Village was transformed into a hot night spot destination.
