The City has emptied the planters on the south side of Library Square - presumably to get rid of the rat nests that were in them.
Pics by me today.

Stadacona Apartments, at 601 Bute, redeveloped in the works. “With commercial, hotel and rental residential uses.” No details yet on any retention of the existing 1912 heritiage register listed building.

Hmm this one again. Last version I heard about they were trying to configure the tower around / with the old building as it's kinda required. Don't remember the tenure but I think it was all residential before

Seems like a heritage building hotel/upper level rental apartment concept will be coming.

I guess it (601 Bute project) would include the 3 neighbouring houses?
647 Bute is not listed on that webpage though.

These would be demolished?

Maybe this one could be moved offsite?

This proposal, and the previous, includes 1222 and 1218 Melvile. Those are the two houses along Melvile. The house on Bute is one lot with the apartment.

Previous proposal was by Henriquez.

July 26, 2026 on RENX they mentioned a 39 storey tower and the commercial being a restaurant.

Sure, let's gentrify those tenants right out of downtown.

I don't think preventing an over 100 net increase in rental apartments from being built here is the wiser decision.

Those two neighbouring houses were teardowns 30-40 years ago (when I saw their interiors), and are of nominal value. Why waste hundreds of thousands of dollars to somehow retain them? They're of zero architectural value also.

Rezoning has also been submitted for 601 Bute.

Quote:
To rezone from DD to CD-1 to permit a 40-storey mixed-use rental building over a six-storey podium with hotel and commercial uses with 328 rental units above, including below-market rental under the Downtown Rezoning Policy and Hotel Development Policy. An FSR of 17.29 and height of 121 m (398.5 ft.) are proposed. The site has existing tenants, and heritage considerations for the Stadacona Apartments on site.

this was a good read, especially given i wasn't able to make it to the open house. As a topic that comes up often on SSP, there is some talk about the factors influencing building height specifically in Vancouver. It notes that the study by KPF found that there is no single technical height “cap” for buildings in Vancouver and how tall a building can reasonably go depends in part on how the building is used.

https://syc.vancouver.ca/projects/higher-buildings/higher-buildings-policy-review.pdf

We should hear back about future policy options in early 2027.
