There seems to be a man in that structure and what with the bell there maybe it was to warn unsuspecting pedestrians on the street that a huge train was oncoming.

Seems so crazy to have a locomotive so close to a building like that!

Indeed, Scott Charles identified this location in the old thread back in 2018. It was First Street and North Edgeware Road, but as Scott pointed out, the southern end of North Edgeware Road no longer exists. See here for Scott's post.

If you want to read a complex discussion of Santa Fe 2nd District Pasadena area signals go to the Trainorders site for a thread (but it’s kind of late era stuff with some historical info in there).

This was a railroad tower. At the least it would have controlled the crossing gate system since Pacific Electric tracks crossed here too. The Oak Knoll line cars ran all the way down here into 1950, the year of this image, and then it was over. But if it was a more complex tower, and this one looks smaller than usual, it would have controlled the Interlock Plant which allowed the tower guys to run all the track switches in the area from a single location (throwing levers). On the Cruiseline site there is a photo south of here with the Super Chief heading into Los Angeles as it passes the old freight house. You’ll see there are no hand controlled switch stands on the tracks, so they had to be set remotely either by an interlock tower or later by an operator of Centralized Traffic Control (turning knobs that are handling an electro-mechanical system) off in an office location.

USC has a sequence of photos of the Pasadena rail crossings. You’d be amazed to see where those trains ran through. But they were there well before all those houses crowded in around them. That central stretch was all open lands when they began laying rails.

Kind of funny to me because I’ve been going over the photos of the old Los Angeles Oil Fields and some of that stuff was shot around 1st Street. It’s like there was a civilization brought to ruin and then rebuilt with a whole new layer which was then dismantled itself in short order. And now that’s replaced too.

And normally, whichever railroad turned up second was held responsible for running the tower to protect the tain crossings (cars aren’t their job). So it may just be that this was a Pacific Electric towerman’s post which would have been closed out when the trolleys ceased. The gates, bells, and lights could then just be activated electrically by rail contacts as the trains moved toward the road crossing. A lot of the crossings only had wig-wags to warn the drivers to stop.

The reverse says Paul's Shop on "12th St LA". That's Cartridge Mechanical Works/Corp at 217-219 W 12th Street.The 1926 CD lists them as Cartridge Core Radiator Manufacturers and Repairs. Welding, Brazing, Machine Work and Auto Blacksmithing. Paul H Zehring was the president of the company

Paul Henry Zehring (born c.1886 Indiana, radiator repairman, lived with his wife in 1940 at 417 North Kenwood in Glendale: https://www.myheritage.com/research/reco...ing-in-1940-united-states-federal-census

The residence was just above Lexington a few blocks east of Brand. The last sale of property was around 1985 and there is now an apartment building on the site which may date to 1986 (or before?). Paul’s business would have been close to the post 1925 Chamber of Commerce building, below the Examiner, and was smack in the zone where many auto makers had buildings…based on a 1931 map (which was coincidentally produced by a firm in the Central Building which we just looked at). And in tracking back, I came across a postcard on alamy of the 1903-1925 CoC in the Southwest Building on the 100 block of S. Broadway (east side) which portrays the once well known ZINKAND CAFE occupying the ground floor spaces.
