This project is starting to look like it will happen, looks like most of the funding has been confirmed now. Just need the Federal Government to chip in. $35M is peanuts for the Feds.

It's definitely going to happen, there should be a federal announcement soon and additional provincial funding.

It'll be nice to have an important trade and research hub in Winnipeg, and it's a nice building, but I'm not sure it will have that dramatic an effect on the downtown. I'm not pooh-poohing it, in fact I'm strongly in favour of it. I'm just saying it doesn't seem to be a big "wow", like Wehwehneh B. or Portage Place for the downtown. Of course, not everything has to be a "big wow", it just feels kind of like a smaller-to-mid-size government office opening up.

It's another piece to the puzzle. All of these individual things are what builds a downtown.

I think we should know by now that no single project, no matter how big it is, can magically transform downtown.

Another piece of the puzzle is a good way of putting it.

This building, the Richardson one across the street, the residential conversion going on the south side of Portage Ave East, and the opening of Portage and Main will all help connect Portage and Main to the East Exchange and Waterfront area.

The fact that it's a huge parking lot filler and an attractive building, and how it complements the Richardson Innovation Centre across the street is a major win. Once this project is built, the Bond Tower is completed, the Fairmont renovation is done and 138 Portage Ave East is filled this area will have a different feel to it.

It's important to note that this facility is a driver of economic tourism. Over the last 50 years the Main street facility has welcomed 'over 100K global buyers, farmers, value chain members and the agriculture industry to the facility'.

Those are good points, plus the comments that it is a piece of the downtown puzzle. I had no idea the Main Street facility was such a draw for business people.

Wouldn’t the mushroom looking bldg where Cereals Research is now also go up for redevelopment after GATE is built? So more potential there.

The Canadian Grain Commission, which owns and occupies the majority of the building at 303 Main Street, is expected to use the space that Cereals Canada will vacate. The CGC has indicated it needs additional room to carry out all of its functions and has already relocated some operations to other facilities. Cereals Canada's lease expires on March 31, 2027, and they have been given no option to renew.

From Cereals Canada webite:

Quote:
Between 2021 and 2023 alone, Cereals Canada engaged with over 3,000 participants from 69 countries through technical exchanges, trade missions, outreach, and webinars. Gate will not only ensure our future programming, but it also promises to amplify these efforts by providing a world-class facility to host international delegations and demonstrate the value of high-quality Canadian grains.

Most crucially, Gate will serve as a nucleus for customer interaction. With more than 50 years of experience in the global cereals markets, we know that relationships are everything. Gate will provide a venue for meaningful experiences and exchanges, allowing us to create new relationships and build on those we have already established.

The mushroom building has been undergoing significant renovations over the past few years and into the future. It has just never been publicly announced and passers by on the streets would never notice.

Also, I though that CRC only occupied 3 floors of the building.

The Canadian Grain Commission has their accredited laboratories on the 13th-16th floor plus their HQ office space in the building, I'm unsure of how many floors their office occupies. From my understanding they want that additional lab space Cereals Canada currently uses.

Keeping Canada Competitive: Why Gate Matters

Canadian cereals reach more than 80 countries and generate $12.8 billion annually. But in an increasingly complex and competitive marketplace, maintaining that success requires continued investment.

The Global Agriculture Technology Exchange (Gate) helps connect Canada's world-class production and quality advantages to real market opportunities by strengthening buyer confidence, protecting premiums, and supporting long-term industry success.

The opportunity for growth is significant, but so is the need for action. Watch the video, featuring Gate Capital Campaign Cabinet member Bryce Eger, to learn how Gate will help keep Canada's cereals sector competitive at home and around the world.
