I don't think it is true that only the US has major or long-term successful tech companies. The UK has ARM, Germany has SAP, the NL has ASML, Sweden Spotify, and there are many others. Just about every successful East Asian country has some kind of ecosystem of successful high tech companies, often more oriented toward hardware.
I also believe a lot of Canada's competitiveness problems are fixable. The housing market is by itself a huge factor. We have advantages like shared language and similar time zones to the US and lower wages.
