Where I'd Live

A new map tool is floating around social media to show your friends where you'd consider living. I filled out the one for the U.S. but there are maps for various countries. Here is my map:



I prefer big cities, less driving, and warm weather, in that order. Most of my map reflects those preferences, but not entirely.

^ I suppose Michigan is a good place indeed, in spite of the bad press.
For example, they abolished death penalty in 1846, 135 years before France did, lol.
I was astonished when I read about this.

The thing is in democracy, justice is supposed to understand, not so much punish or take revenge.
So yeah, I guess it's a civilized state.

Why did they make Illinois and Chicagoland a single state?

Seems like just another way to disagree and bash each other's opinions. Each state has its 'good' and 'bad' places (if you can call it that). Someone who said California would probably scoff at living in Fresno if they chose California because they thought about SF or San Diego, and might even consider living in Austin, TX if they had to choose between Fresno and Austin

Interesting the contrast between NY (absolutely) and NJ (never).

Regarding the US, I guess Chicago (yes); New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco (maybe). Another 2 or 3 of “probably not” and “never” for all the rest.

If I were American I'd probably live in Chicago. It hits all the stuff I want and is relatively affordable. New Orleans is a close second, though it's very hard to get a good job there. The crime stuff doesn't bother me too much as I've lived in a very dangerous city before.

The West Coast is beautiful but the WC chill is real in my experience. Very hard to meet new people. Big East Coast cities are too expensive except for Philly, which I could probably do.

I want to know why the water borders for 3 of the Great Lakes show up (Michigan looks like a mess) but the other 2 do not.

On the one hand, the urban places in NJ are an extension of NYC, but with more driving and worse transit. The rest of the state is auto oriented suburbia, which I don't find very appealing. If I was looking for something more rural or small town I would go to upstate NY, Pennsylvania, or elsewhere in the country (New England, Michigan, out west).

It makes sense totally sense to me. Many people say “I like to live in town X because it’s between metropolis Y and Z” or “it’s amazing here, just one hour out metropolis X”.

I want to live right on my target. I love to live Downtown SP not in a neighborhood somewhat close let alone in a sprawling exurb outside SP.

At this point, in the US my preferences are extremely narrow.

Outside the US is another matter.

I forgot Alaska and Hawaii. Hawaii would be a never, Alaska would be a probably not.
