On the one hand, the urban places in NJ are an extension of NYC, but with more driving and worse transit. The rest of the state is auto oriented suburbia, which I don't find very appealing. If I was looking for something more rural or small town I would go to upstate NY, Pennsylvania, or elsewhere in the country (New England, Michigan, out west).
