Honestly, after no-one decided to put a tarp over the holes before winter, I feel like decision had been made whether they wanted to accept that they had made one or not.

Obviously conflicted on it, but just let something happen for Christ's sake. It can't be left all decrepit, it needs to be fixed or go...

The challenge is, that DOD apparently wants to let it go, but there's a vocal historical preservation faction that wants to keep it. They had hoped to use the city to force the matter and the city has (rightfully IMO) declined. So it's back in the DOD's hands now.

I suspect the building will be torn down ultimately. How soon will depend on how many hoops the preservationists can force through. The City angle was just the first attempt. (And there is a public appeal going on with the decorated fence outside the remains at the moment)

I don't think that there's much anyone can do at this point to prevent the feds from tearing it down.

Happy to see a decision. I do not see that building holding significant historical value and I hope DND makes a move on this quickly. It is technically part of the "Fredericton Military Compound" and is named as one of the 4 buildings in the compound. This may complicate things, but Fredericton did the right thing by washing their hands of this building.

It's the only surviving wooden structure in the Garrison District - hard to argue that it doesn't have historical value IMO.

Even if someone with deep pockets stepped forward to assume the building lock, stock and barrel, it's still located in a DND compound. The remnants could maybe be taken down and rebuilt at Kings Landing?

For that type of effort this building seems ill suited and lack the historic value.

Preservationists rarely look to spend their own money for their efforts/demands.

I feel Fredericton and Frederictonians will be just fine with the building being gone.

The Centennial Building is a much, much more significant building in shambles.

Something needs to be done with both buildings. They're both major eyesores in tourist areas of the city. The Centennial building at least is probably salvageable, as long as they can find someone who won't turn it into a suburban cookie cutter monster.

The Guard house though is probably a teardown. Repairs are likely unreasonable, and DOD clearly doesn't want to do anything with it. Taking it out will give better access to the side of the armory, which isn't really needed but they probably would appreciate.

So yeah, that building is likely toast once permission can be given to yoink it down.

227 units at $32.0 million seems like a good investment. At F'ton average rental rates, this should generate in the range of $5.0 million annual rental revenue.

Latest PAC minutes always include building permit details for previous month. In this case August PAC minutes include building permit details for July 2026.
