Avoid eye contact too. I agree the victims shouldn't be blamed, but there's a level of street smarts that will help you out.
Similar to defensive driving. You can be following the rules and get hit by an idiot driver, or sometimes you can be more careful and observant and not put yourself into extra risky situations and avoid collisions that still wouldn't be your fault.
