In São Paulo metro area there are some 7 million people of Italian descent. That’s more than Milan metro area but probably slightly less than Buenos Aires.

Regarding Lebanese, São Paulo is only behind Beirut metro area but not by much.

There are some 300k-400k Japanese Brazilians, way more than any other city in the world outside Japan.

And of course, over 5 million people born in Northeast Brazil (and way more counting their descent). That’s more Northeasterners than Recife (4.1 million), Fortaleza (3.6 million) or Salvador (3.4 million).

Both videos have English subtitles (automatically transcribed/translated by IA I believe).

And because this is Sunday and all Sundays must end in music, this is one of the most famous airs from the opera Carmen (the most performed opera in the world), by a French Guianese prima dona dressed in traditional Creole clothes. What a voice!

The 18,122 Guyanese-born population in the Paris Region (2023 census) is 6.2% of French Guiana's population (293,996). But then this stat is not entirely apples and oranges, because French Guiana has more than half of its population who were not born in French Guiana (they are Surinamese, Brazilian, and Haitian immigrants, as well as Metropolitan French people), whereas (British) Guyana has almost no foreign-born population, so if you take only the people born in French Guiana, then those residing in the Paris Region are 11.2% of those who reside in French Guiana (that will be more apples-to-apples compared to your % here for British Guyana).

Imagine telling a room full of Detroit, or St. Louis, or Cleveland civic leaders in 1950 that nothing-burgers like Orlando, Tampa, and Vegas would have more immigrants than their city 75 years later. You woulda been able to hear their laughter on the freaking moon.
Just compare the foreign-born percentages of Chicago and Illinois vs. the other Great Lakes Midwest states (all in the single digits).

Foreign born

Chicago Metro Area 19.4%
Illinois 15.4%
US 14.8%
East North Central division (Great Lakes Midwest) 8.8%
Michigan 7.7%

This is not a "fuller look". It contains actually less data than the figures already posted in this thread, since Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Réunion are not included. Laos, Egypt, Ukraine, Syria are also not included.

This is not "foreign born". You post here without reading what other people post. Your figure is the green figure for the year 2022.

The overseas departments are not "foreign." They're French citizens and take part in the presidential elections in France and have representation in the National Assembly and Senate.

I do agree that British citizens born abroad shouldn't be counted but that hardly merits adding the overseas departments to French figures to "compensate." The US figures don't include US citizens born abroad, and the Canadian figures I've presented don't include Canadian citizens born abroad.

I also find it strange that the national statistical agency would list individual countries arbitrarily rather than a size threshold though I suppose it's possible. But they're not listing them for Paris so what can we do?

Is a Pied-Noir foreign-born? I assume no bc Algeria was France? But then I assume all Arab Algerians are counted as foreign-born, even if they lived in Algeria when it was France? And then not clear what they would do with Algerian Jews and other non-Arab but not originally French inhabitants.

People from the Channel Islands and the British Overseas Territories are also British citizens, yet they are counted as foreign-born in British statistics. So by excluding the people born in Overseas France from Paris, but including the people born in the British Overseas Territories, Channel Islands, and Isle of Man for London, you are comparing apples and oranges. Especially when this group of people is as numerous as 208,000 people in Paris.

A Pied-Noir is counted as a foreign-born person in the census. That's why there's a big discrepancy between the foreign-born and immigrant figure for Algeria.

Algerian Jews were French citizens, so they are counted as foreign-born, and not as immigrant. Algerian Muslims were not French citizens (except for ca. 60,000 Muslims belonging to the elites) so they are counted as both foreign-born and immigrants. The Muslims who were French citizens (ca. 60,000 back then) are counted as foreign-born, but not as immigrants

I know a few native Guyanese or offspring of native Guyanese, but I have never in my life met a single person from French Guiana or Suriname (Dutch Guiana).

Here are the apples-to-apples figures for New York, Paris, and London. These are the most recent figures for each city.

For London it's the internationally defined FUA, which corresponds quite well to the MSA. For Paris it's the Paris administrative region, which is slightly smaller than the FUA.

In percentage of the total population:

With Bermuda (1,001), Channel Islands (1,131) and Montserrat (3,389) correctly removed, the born outside UK population in London drops from 3,575,741 to 3,570,220. British Virgin Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar etc. are not on the list.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Largely irrelevant, as most of those apples and oranges problems come from children of British expats and British colonial settlers born outside the UK. But keep pretending you don't understand the problem with your figures...

Are Hawaiians perceived as "immigrants" and "alien" in the 48 contiguous states the way the Puerto Ricans are?
