Their endorsement of Nithya probably explains the nature of the headline. But the underlying data being reported should still be correct. I'm just surprised how mismatched it is vs the experience on the street.

Sending a few homeless out of a smaller district to a nearby district is simply deceiving numbers.

I don't really believe this stuff. It doesn't even make sense logically. The homeless aren't a sedentary population. They move about, and certainly aren't doing so while considering the specific boundaries of a neighborhood border in mind. I think it's very easy to get homeless to leave for the purposes of a count, only for them to come back when the count has finished.

The Los Angeles Times article on homelessness (up citywide, down in Raman's district) is based on numbers provided by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority's January point-in-time count. The counts were released on Friday.

It is not only possible but likely that the homeless counts and locations have changed in the 7 months since then. That may explain the anecdotal narrative about homelessness in Los Feliz as of right now. However, it is most unlikely that the LA Times is lying or otherwise misrepresenting the facts as reported by the authority in order to corruptly benefit someone whom they endorsed for city council way back in January of 2024. They don't even do endorsements anymore, and if they did for the mayor's race, it wouldn't be for Raman, given the LAT owner is a Trump toady.

I don't think the LA Times is lying. I just don't think individual district homeless numbers matter. In the grand scheme of things, they are meaningless.

^This month's "Westways" magazine (from AAA) has a photo just like that on its cover! I don't know why they send us a physical magazine, but it was great to see the new Lucas museum and the LA skyline when I picked up the mail yesterday.

After three years of quiet, plans from Onni Group apartment tower near Wilshire/La Brea Station on the Miracle Mile are once again moving forward.

This week, the Los Angeles Department of City Planning published a draft environmental impact report for the Wilshire and Cloverdale project, which would bring a 46-story high-rise to a roughly 1.4 acre site located at 5350-5376 Wilshire Boulevard. 419 one- and two-bedroom dwellings atop 2,645 square feet of ground-floor restaurant space and parking for 443 vehicles.

Requested approvals include Transit Oriented Communities incentives to permit a larger, denser development than zoning rules would otherwise allow due to the property's location near the recently-completed subway station. In exchange, the proposed tower would include 47 units of extremely low-income affordable housing.

I had to look it up, and this is a fantastic location, right across N. Alameda from the Chinatown metro station. Too bad it's only going to be five floors of office--why not add homes above that?

Would be interesting to know if the new office building across the street is fully occupied. I'd imagine yes in order for this project to move forward.
