It sure is! I'm always impressed with how tall Vancouver's skyline looks, especially considering they only have 8-9 actual skyscrapers (over 150m). Having so many high-rises with different variations in height in close concentration is I think what makes it look so impressive. And don't get me started on Vancouver's suburban skylines! Always happy to see a Vancouver skyline shot

The vast majority of the Edmonton highrises were built in the 60's and 70's and since then hasn't visibly changed at the same rate as the the other cities. It's population growth has been impressive, but it's been heavily suburban growth.
Calgary has certainly outbuilt Edmonton over the last 20 years but Ottawa has not. Since 2006 Edmonton has had 13 new 100+ meter tall buildings, Ottawa has built 3 (with 3 more under construction).

There are only 13 100 metre+ towers in Ottawa altogether. Three are U/C. We all know Ottawa is vertically challenged compared to the other big cities in Canada.

For context, I count ~43 for Calgary (with a handful more currently under construction).

Calgary has 88 towers over 100 metres... 21 of them are over 150 metres...

Of those 88, 47 are since 2006. Of those 21, 10 are since 2006.

If going by buildings 100m + Ottawa is vertically challenged, but if going by high-rises in general, Ottawa has done quite well. I would bet that since 2006 they aren't far behind Calgary for buildings of that height.

If you're looking at it from the perspective of skyline change, taller towers have more effect, but it doesn't have to be 100m+. A count of buildings 50m+ built over the past 20 years would also give a good indication.

For comparisons sake. 100m+ towers Built in the past 20 years / Under construction

Calgary 87 / 18
Edmonton 36 / 1
Ottawa 18 / 5

I was looking at all highrises, not just ones higher than 100 meters. I don't know the exact number that have been built in Ottawa, but whenever I've been there, I seen cranes everywhere, but I haven't seen that in Edmonton. Maybe Edmonton has built more, and it's only my perception.

Ottawa definitely has more high-rises built and under-construction outside its inner-city than Calgary does.

Calgary has an insane amount of 6 story midrises under construction in every part of the city right now. There are quite a few taller condos and hotels in the pipeline though. We are actually in the midst of a boom that is building momentum to be the largest in possibly the last decade and a half (at least since the Bow / Brookfield / Telus Sky era).

I remember Epcor being a big deal at the time. Can't even see it from most angles now.

Only Downtown. Here's a diagram showing where and what the restrictions are. Outside of that, developers can propose just about anything.

Here's an overview from Harley613 of the proposals in the NCR's central area. Green are complete and u/c, yellow are approved, orange are proposed and blue are planned (proposal not officially submitted).

If we're including the Odenak towers that are topped out, we have 5 towers above 100m u/c.

The proposed table on the Wikipedia is gone, but we probably have a couple dozen approved above 100 meters, with maybe half likely to get built within the next decade. LeBreton Flats will eventually have at least a dozen 100m+, again including the Odenak twins.

Oh, I know. I actually think the current/building boom will probably be the most important/transformative boom in Calgary since the 1970s (which changed Calgary from a prairie nowhere to a mid-sized Canadian city). This boom is fundamentally changing the character of inner-city Calgary.

I'm still a hopeless Calgary-booster, even though I moved away 15 years ago. I'm just trying to throw Ottawa a bone here (and, anyway, its still true that Ottawa has way more suburban high-rises than Calgary).

If all those get built it will make Ottawa feel like another tier of city. That view with the river gives it an almost coastal metropolis vibe.

I was just checking out some skyline shots on skyrise cities and the view of DT Calgary is starting to feel next level.

Ottawa definitely seems to have more scattered highrises. Here are what I think to be the first true highrises to go into new suburbs outside the ringroad in the north of Calgary:

From Golfing Guy on skyrise.

Nothing fancy but here's the rednering for Nolan Hill rise:
