The challenge with having donors with large ($10,000 or more) commitments to an organization like CMHR is they can feel entitled to influence the content of the museum. Hopefully with Gail Asper withdrawing her families donation the museum finds many additional smaller donors stepping in to fill that void with a more diverse set of voices.

For example, there was a similar issue in the past regarding the representation of Holodomor (forced man-made famine in the Ukraine in 1932-1933) at the museum. There was definitely influence being put on the museum that the WWII Holocaust would be placed far and above any other attacks targeted at ethnic groups.

Personally I find it interesting that the CANADIAN Museum of Human Rights dedicates more gallery space to the WWII Holocaust than the treatment of Canadian Indigenous people over the generations including colonization, forced relocations (to reserves), their lack of rights to vote until 1960, residential schools, and more.

There is also the internment of Japanese-Canadians in Canada in WWII.

I grew up in the inner city, so our Social Studies teachers touched a lot on the human rights issues against indigenous peoples, residential schools and Japanese Internment Camps. Heaaavily. I was actually quite astounded when I got to Post Secondary and realized how many students have never heard of residential schools nor Japanese Internment Camps.

Sadly, its often a case of "the winners write history. " we, as Canadians can't fall into the trap of allowing oligarchs to tell us how things are, and threaten us with lawsuits to silence the truth from being exposed.
