That picture is from just before my tome and I have no memory of that configuration. Not only does it predate the current configuration there obviously, but it seems to predate much of the street and commercial/residential development in the area.

I have a foggy memory of seeing an unprotected wooden platform further toward Mumford Rd along the Simpson's parking lot. Whether it was on the east side or west side of the line I cannot remember.

The Carney government announced today a nearly $2 billion investment in 45 new locomotives for Via’s long distance and regional and remote services. The chosen vendor is Switzerland’s Stadler which touts its experience building locos for Scandinavian winter conditions. The money includes building of an assembly plant in Montreal.

Stadler is a great choice. This is incredible news.

I kind of thought you would be posting about this when I saw the announcement today. Great news. The coach replacements will definitely be welcome as well.

As an aside, do I see a new paint scheme for VIA?

I expect the renderings are only that, but Via’s practice is to revise its livery anytime they put in service any new or substantially refurbished equipment so it’s a good bet.

While the announcement is certainly welcome, it is disappointing that 45 locomotives and the previously proposed 300-325 new cars will likely be enough to maintain current service levels, not expand them. If Carney believes this investment in Via will help smooth the way for the much larger spend for high speed rail in the corridor, I’m not sure it goes far enough.

Thanks! Replacement of existing is a step in the right direction, at least. For a while I have been wondering if they were going to drop VIA service altogether, at least out east. Hopefully this is an indication that it will keep going, at least until a change in government occurs, whenever that will be... then who knows?
