Mystery mid-century modern house.

Take a look at this fan-tabulous Zig-Zag roof and supports!

tagvenue..(the address isn't included on the website)

Has anyone noticed it from afar? .. I'd like to see it from Google Earth but I don't know the address.

e_r, Pickwick's Book Store was at 6743 Hollywood Blvd. (I've been there many many a time). It's now a Taco Bell. Be that as it may, here's the above view now:

So I wonder when the faux-modern facade was removed from the building?

Another request for our Most Amazing Noirish Sleuths:

There's a low rise medical building at 12340 Santa Monica Blvd, WLA, 90025.

X# of years ago, they put up a faux green glass facade on SMB, which is still there.

Does anyone have a photo of the original building, before the trickery?

This is not an answer to your question; but in researching it may be helpful to know when the facade was put up. The building permit apparently for this work is dated 2/23/2001. Here's a piece of the permit:

Building Permit, LA Dept. of Building and Safety

12340 Santa Monica Blvd

I found this Lwize, but it doesn't look tall enough to be the same building as what's there now. Could this have been 12340
before the current structure?

That looks like the Wilshire United Methodist Church at 4350 Wilshire Boulevard.

BTW. British "bobbies" get their name from British Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel who founded London's Metropolitan Police in 1829. He later became the Prime Minister.

That looks tall enough for the corner building, which has a three-story building behind it.
The rest of the SMB facade to the east has a false 3rd story to match the corner building, but has a two-story building behind it. The two-story building to the east probably had a different street address.

(Google maps shows the trickery, but I can't post the pictures)

Pickwick Book Store was the best book store in Hollywood. The other corner was Diamond Jim's restaurant, a very popular place in the 60's . The building it was in was a medical offices building. I worked the parking lot in back between the medical building and Don The Beachcomber's restaurant. A very busy lot with those three businesses drawing a lot of people.

LoopNet gives a build date of 1987 for 12340 Santa Monica Boulevard.

Not just any Taco Bell...it's a Taco Bell Cantina.

The Hollywood Cantina is the first Cantina restaurant in Los Angeles County. Taco Bell Cantinas offer a unique menu, upscale restaurant design and specialty alcoholic beverages.

I'm glad to report "Moose and Squirrel" survived the Sunset Blvd. at Horn Ave. and Holloway Dr. water main break and subsequent flooding.
Boris & Natasha are being questioned concerning this matter.
Someone noticed the hole in the ground to the left kinda looks like Boris with his hat on!

Any of you hear about this? According to the only video surveillance camera footage I've seen, it started at exactly 3:04:32AM Thursday morning.

Yes, it was major LA news.

A 1910 water main broke. It was slated for replacement in 2031 (based on city-wide LADWP risk assessments).

There's millions of damage, not just to buildings but to the subterranean residential parking garages filled with nice cars.
Send your claim to LADWP.

We had a thread a while back with an image looking south that may have been shot from the health building that became City Hall South. I couldn’t find any good period images of that building but one popped up from 1961 here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/lostmarket/posts/2197566694350713/

You can see it beyond City Hall with Parker Center behind on the next block and just left (north)..

sourced FB as linked above.

It made national news. (ABC, anyway)...

When I saw it on the evening news I was afraid the water gushed down Hancock Ave. and swept away my little bungalow.

The water DID come down Hancock Ave. E_R!

Two of the apartment buildings at the top of Palm have parking lots with entrances on both Palm and Hancock, so the water went right through those garages and down Hancock. (The building on the corner of SMB and Hancock had the visitor parking area flooded.) It was forceful enough coming down to push some of the parked cars together on the west side of Hancock. (The MTA Bus exit/entrance is across the street from Hancock on SMB and is how all the water got down into the bus yard.) I know someone who lives on Palm whose car is totaled. His apartment bldg. still doesn't have power.
