Downtown stadiums and entertainment venues are a huge bonus for Vancouver. We keep hearing how good they are compared to other places.
Daily Hive suggested that it would be possible to squeeze a stadium onto the parcels at the south east corner of Main and Terminal, (with all the existing streets removed). Quebec would be irrelevant to that idea. It's City owned, and was intended to be an innovation hub in previous plans. It looks like the stadium might fit, but it wasn't clear whether the required plaza space could also be created to potentially evacuate the stadium That was one of the problems for the Waterfront proposal.

Sure, while we're at it, what would be even funnier is building the stadium on the Plaza of Nations land right across the street from BC Place. There is enough space there too.

I mean, if Northchild's not going to do anything with the Plaza, we might as well ask for it back.

If we learned anything from the world cup in Vancouver, stadiums don't need to be evacuated fast. Sigh.

But this location would be awesome. SkyTrain, bars, parks. Amazing space.

What if we put a retractable roof on it so that it would be great in any weather? And then put it on the downtown peninsula instead, close to both major transit lines, hotels, etc.

Wait a minute...

I've been to dozens of stadiums on this planet and BC place is amazing and honestly one of my favorites. Every "non vancouverite" i take along with me to a game, loves BC Place. But, for whatever reasons, it does not seem to work for this team and I understand why.

Whitecaps played at Swangard last night because that was the only stadium available. I'm sure weird scheduling issues happens in the background all the time.

You do? Your post seems to indicate otherwise.

It's all about greed to me.

Until the band's pyrotechnics malfunction and the stadium does have to be evacuated fast. It's a basic safety requirement for any stadium. It's why the Aquilinis couldn't put towers all the way round Rogers Arena, and why one of the rental towers is on stilts to allow the evacuation plaza to continue to exist underneath.

I was being sarcastic. Leaving BC place after a WC game was a nightmare if you did not sit anywhere near the few open exits.

100% i do. and its in that post. Why have a stadium of 54K if you can't even fill half of it and your scheduling is dictated by a Monster Truck show (which happened for a playoff game)

And how it is greed when they originally wanted to build a stadium with their own money?

Thanks for clarifying - I assume if there had been an incident of some sort, the usual evacuation routes could have been opened up, but the level of security they felt they needed restricted the usual exit routes.

That one's new to me - AFAIK the billionaires want to build the stadium with our money.

The mostly empty lands adjacent to the Cambie street bridge were mentioned a few weeks ago as part of a Major League Baseball expansion bid, but if that bid doesn't materialize, that would be an epic spot for a Whitecaps stadium. Not sure why that spot wasn't mentioned as a candidate before, since the City appears to be willing to consider an MLB stadium there.

The space is so large that it could easily accommodate a 30 000 capacity stadium, plus enough room for residential towers that would meet housing goals through higher density and height, plus hotel/casino/entertainment district.

It would be an excellent anchor for the burgeoning Broadway Corridor, and would be far superior to a Hastings Park stadium, where Southeast False Creek is served by the Canada Line, Broadway Subway, and Expo Line about a 15 minute walk away. And in the middle of the densely populated Metro Core.

Agreed, that would be a great site, although some would mourn the loss of proposed parkland
(and I still think moving to an outdoor stadium with the shift to a winter MLS season is risky).

I think that was the original Kerfoot proposal over the railway tracks, not the current PNE or other proposals.

Again, no stadium is being seriously proposed anywhere other than Hastings Park - anything else is just good old Ken from Definitely Not Vancity Buzz dreaming out loud again.

Olympic Village has two major problems: getting supplies in, and people out. Both killed the railway proposal way back when.

At any rate, the City has that spot earmarked for other stuff.

Yet they've had more than enough time to come up with other proposals; nobody asked them to wait until MLS started consolidating and their options were apparently reduced to "bailout" or "sell and move."

I agree that an outdoor stadium here with the MLS schedule change is a terrible idea. We all know this City is night and day in the rain and the sun. I was at the temporary Empire Field when BC Place was getting the new roof put on. The bad days are not worth the good days, and that was over a summer CFL season.

BC Place continues to make the most sense. As for "half empty", use that as motivation to get more fans in there. The Sounders play in the same stadium as the Seahawks. We'll see how those outdoor games go.

The new MLS schedule will sync with the rest of the soccer world, so player transfers are easier, etc. There is a 2 month winter break, so the Whitecaps and the rest of the league would avoid the coldest stretch of winter. The league would likely schedule northern teams with more road games during the late fall, and late winter schedule.

Count me as one. This is a better plan and would serve the public significantly better than a stadium build for billionaires that couldn't buy their own land. They have the money.

Wish the city would just get on with this but this doesn't seem to be in the near terms plans at all.
