Even if it wasn't for all of the other Trump antics, the political meddling with the suspension is enough on it's own for most people to root against them.

That was a fun game and wild the whole way through - no doubt the most dramatic of the tournament so far. Heartbreaking for Egypt though (who I was hoping would pull out the win).

Overall pretty disappointing results for me in this round of 16 (all of the teams I liked eliminated except for Norway. Glad the US lost too). Hoping for a Morocco vs. Norway finale, though I expect a rehash of 2022 (France vs. Argentina) is more likely.

Dude, it's not disgusting to toot against the US. Remember, this is the country that rooted in a guy who wants to make us the 51st state. also his meddling in the WC is ridiculous.
Normally I'd root for the US, but not right now.

This is mainly transit and stats during the games, the New Jersey part seems weird, they were only allowing WC ticket holders to use the trains blocking out regulars for hours on game days.

World Cup Review: How Canada Outperformed the U.S. and Mexico | Your Morning

8 Jul 2026 #WorldCup2026 #FIFAWorldCup #Toronto
The World Cup matches in Toronto and Vancouver have officially wrapped up - and according to a new report, Canada was the tournament’s breakout star. While the world’s eyes were on North America, leading transportation firm Leading Mobility found that Canada didn’t just meet expectations - we exceeded them. From record-breaking transit ridership in Vancouver to Toronto outpacing its original performance targets, this report suggests Canada may have handled hosting duties better than our American and Mexican counterparts. David Cooper, founder of Leading Mobility, breaks down the data, the infrastructure wins, and why Canada’s hosting strategy set a new standard for the World Cup.

There’s one Canadian left in the World Cup… Montréaler, Yassine Bounou.

This is Montreal’s night to shine for this World Cup, as they have the biggest French and biggest Moroccan populations of any city in Canada. Morocco, however, seems to be the far more supported side in Montreal than France. If Morocco wins tonight, the streets of Montreal will be wild, and I think most other North Africans and Arabs in Montreal will be cheering for Morocco to make history.

Are there even many French team supporters in Quebec? I think it’s too bad we didn’t see the Italians of Montreal storm Toronto Stadium wearing their Italia jerseys to a game against Canada… but i don’t think we would have seen too many Québécois showing up at BC Place or Olympic Stadium had they been given a more reasonable offer to host games. Olympic Stadium is in dire need of a football/soccer reconfiguration, and this World Cup was the perfect time to justify the expense to do it to FIFA standards. Since the cost of demolition costs most than the cost of refurbishment, the renovations are going to have to happen… I just hope they do it properly, because Olympic Stadium is actually great, and could be one of the best football stadiums in North America.

It’s really a shame Montreal didn’t host any games, but I think Canada has a very good opportunity to host the Copa America in the future, once Olympic Stadium is renovated for soccer/football, and after Toronto builds a new, 70,000+ stadium, which could end up be like Canada’s version of Wembley Stadium, so it could also host something like Grey Cup, just like Wembley sometimes hosts rugby matches. Having proper stadiums in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton, and others could even enable Canada to go for another joint bid one day… possibly with countries like Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, which together, would probably have just enough stadiums to host the World Cup without the United States or England. I never want Canada to co host such an unequal World Cup with the US again, but I can’t imagine us ever getting a fair arrangement. The US is already trying to claim the 2038 World Cup as theirs, so I think Canada could realistically go for a joint bid for 2042-2050, the question is just who would our co bidders be?

I think most of the world will be cheering for Morocco tonight, and as a Canadian, I hope they win the World Cup so we can say Canada went out to the best team in the tournament.

Let’s Go-Morocco-Go!

I was in Germany visiting relatives in summer '86 cheering on "my team", which was not Canada. During the final we were in Munich, and I exulted when we came back from a 2-goal deficit, and was heartbroken when we lost. But Canada was on no one's radar as a contender, and isn't even now. But Canada should be proud of how far it has come.
As someone old enough to remember the 86 world cup, yes, Canada has come so far. Not just in the team, but soccer as a sport in general. Back in 86, nobody cared much about Canada being in it for the first time and there was very little buzz. The only people interested in soccer back then were Europeans, or children of Europeans. We didn't have the African or south American populations back then. Definitely no watch parties for any of Canada's games, let alone any other country's games.
Here in Calgary, there were 3 different watch parties just for Mexico's games. Canada might not qualify for the World Cup every time, but the sport has made hige strides either way.

Oh I thought he meant it was embarrassing for a prominent player who is from here to be playing for a foreign team which implies that ours wasn't considered good enough.

You do know that he moved from Canada at age 3 and never looked back right? He’s about as Canadian as a mariachi band.

Yes, true, though the sport was already much-loved in schoolyards when I was a kid. I always found a group of kids eager to play in grade school and middle school. Afterwards, I went to an artsy alternative high school with an unmowed, unused soccer field, and that, unfortunately, was where my soccer-playing days more or less ended. I should have joined a league as a teenager. Who knows where it might have led?
The only name I remember from that '86 team is Lenarduzzi, but you're right, as I recall very few Canadians gave a damn about our team, including me.

Where there's a natural 2 month (actually, 3-4 month) pause due to weather, that's the off season.
MLS is currently off for almost 2 months in the middle of the season due to the world cup and is off for a month in non-world cup years due to other summer tournaments.
The summer break for MLS have been getting longer and longer with the season starting earlier and ending later over the last 15 years.

The 2 month summer break for MLS will be filled with the World Cup, Gold Cup and Leagues Cup (MLS and Liga MX month long Tournament) which will have MLS players and teams playing.

In the World Cup yes, but I have a bigger hate-on for England!

I’ll cheer for the only team left from the Americas, Argentina.

The Semi Finals are set:

France vs Spain
England vs Argentina

Both matches should be entertaining, for their historical rivalries.

Canada's qualifying for the World Cup every time from here on if Infantino gets his way with the 64 team expansion he keeps talking about. It would be as shocking (relative to confederation) as Italy missing. That said, Italy missed three times in a row so I guess it could happen to anyone.

There's almost no way unless our program is set back decades again that Canada wouldn't be among the top 7-8 teams in north america making it through.

Hopefully that doesn't happen. There were already a lot of one-sided matches in the group stage this year, due to 48 teams participating.

Canada-Qatar 6-0
Germany-Curacao 7-1
Portugal-Uzbekistan 5-0
Mexico-Czechia 3-0
Senegal-Iraq 5-0
Sweden-Tunisia 5-1
Brazil-Haiti 3-0
Japan-Tunisia 4-0
Spain-Saudi Arabia 4-0
etc

Expanding to 64 teams will show the gap in talent even futher. Not a good idea. But revenue and $$$ dictate the way forward, and as long as idiots are willing to pay thousands of dollars to attend some of these meaningless matches, then FIFA will expand to 64 teams.
