I see the answer was provided already. Long Beach I understand had them as well as Pasadena. I have not seen one in person but wish I could. My favorite signals are Acmes. I remember them well on Sunset Blvd. on my way to Michaeltorena St. school.

If I'm not mistaken, the former Sears on Santa Monica and Western can be seen in the background. A few years ago the structure was evidently going to be converted into studio space and housing. https://la.urbanize.city/post/hollywood-bardas-bain-capital-echelon-studios Unclear what part, if any, of the original structure remains or will remain.

Route 66 never actually went to the Santa Monica Pier. In fact, it was technically terminated at the corner of Lincoln & Olympic, which as we saw a few pages back was the home of the Olympic Auto Hotel, technically one property away from the corner. And as seen in the photo, the actual corner was home to a Richfield station.

No, the LaBrea shot was looking westward with the studios down on the south side of Santa Monica. The Sears was way east of there on the north side of the road very close to Western Avenue, a block west of it. There was a diner on the opposite corner by the Sears (NE corner of the intersection).Underground at the Sears was a tunnel hidden behind doors which led under the street and over to the diner…which may have been a Sears operation (???). They had desserts in a tall spinning glass case.Farmers Brothers coffee was served there. And there was a Sherry’s restaurant just east of Western…MCM styled. Beyond that you came to the Ted’s Ranch Market where you could also eat.The smell of dry cleaning fluid hung in the air by Western south of S.M. Blvd..

Here is reprinted information from 1917 which ckearly states that the Kalem Moving (or Motion) Picture Company had moved in 1913 from a Verdugo Canyon lot into a studio located on Verdugo Road in Glendale. They further note that the Hollywood studio (actually East Hollywood) was to be closed with that operation consolidated with the Glendale site See here: https://www.fictionhousepress.com/MPSTUD01.HTM

Now, can anyone actually pinpoint this final studio? Was it where the Verdugo Pass was crested by the Los Angeles City Limits and then turned downhill into Glendale. Or was it up north past the todays location of Glendale High School?

There was a Hollywood Sporting Goods on the south side of Hollywood Boulevard at least through the ‘60’s. (They had an indoor ramp for testing your skis, or maybe just your inability to balance on an angled surface.) I have not been able to clearly spot it in any photos of thise blocks, and don’t remember the address…maybe near the big toy store. Star was a different operation existing at the same time. There was also some place IIRC along Sunset (maybe in the old PEP BOYS store) where you could get some equipment for ball sports. Don’t recall what they had beyond that stuff.
