If they didn't have oil, all the western head quarters of many companies would not have moved to Calgary. At one point, they were all based here in Winnipeg. But Calgarian's don't like to admit that.

I know many Manitobans that move to Alberta, and they never fail to tell you "See, ______ is the reason I moved to Calgary and didn't stay in Winnipeg", even though it was never brought it up.

Terrible article, written for no other purpose than to put down Winnipeg under the guise of backhanded compliments.

Calgarians being Calgarians is spot on.

Calgarians honestly believe they are better than everyone else. It's in their DNA, like American exceptionalism. I don't know why they think their BLAND AF city is so great.

I think if anyone were to become Winnipeg's Night Life Mayor, it would be Stephen Hua. He tries to throw many many events downtown and around Winnipeg.

So many drug sales are done through social media now or texting apps, it's the open drug use that really needs a crackdown. Hopefully this is successful.

Winnipeg police, mayor to release details of plan to crack down on public illicit drug use, sales
Thursday, Jun. 25, 2026

Winnipeg Police Service officials and the city’s mayor are planning to release details Friday on a new initiative meant to address open drug use and drug trafficking in public places.

Mayor Scott Gillingham, Winnipeg police Chief Gene Bowers and Supt. Brian Miln, who commands the service’s uniformed operations, are expected to speak to reporters Friday morning.

The initiative, which comes in response to an “overwhelming number of community concerns and public safety issues,” will include an increased police presence in neighbourhoods with frequent open drug use, police said.

To be honest, I think most people, myself included, see "open" drug use as the major problem to be addressed for our city. I think it contributes greatly to the feelings of lack of safety and decay that stops many people from going downtown.

I have to admit I also feel a twinge of hypocrisy. Not seeing a problem doesn't alleviate it. It shouldn't be okay that there are still people blasted out of their minds, lying in filth, but doing it hidden behind closed doors.

I guess we have to start somewhere. Maybe cracking down on as much of the visible stuff as we can will help in the long run.

Hopefully they also decide to adequately deal with the homeless encampments issue as well.

The bus shelters along Portage/Sherbrook and Maryland have all had the glass and benches removed.

This is a couple months after new glass was installed in these shelters - leading to the shelters being used as continuous drug dens. Hopefully Winnipeg Transit has smartened up and realized that you only need a roof on these shelters.

That was an initiative pushed by Councillor Cindy Gilroy to deter drug use in them.

^ Good to hear. She is very vocal about cleaning up this stuff in her ward (where I live).

It has really helped out Vimy park this year.

Now someone needs to have Agape Table start dealing with the mess they create in the 2 or 3 block radius from their operation near Furby/Portage

It's sad that this is what it's come down to, having to sacrifice transit infrastructure at the expense of drug users. Hopefully it helps the area.

Daniel McIntyre Coun. Cindy Gilroy said that while she thinks governments are making progress on getting people into housing, not enough is being done to address the addiction and mental health issues some Winnipeggers are facing.

"The governments have to come together and try to figure this out, because this isn't going away anytime soon, and it's impacting these neighbourhoods substantially," she said.

Gilroy told CBC News she has asked for bus shelters in the area — where there have been reports of open drug use and dealing — to be temporarily removed.

"We're going to have to start looking at ways where we're going to manage this because it's a struggle," she said.

Glad to see that police are finally dealing with open drug use and trade. Had to laugh though at quote from police superintendent...'we underestimated the problem'. Really? Where has he been? Now we see if this does any good.

Street Links also needs to help clean up the mess they create. It's great they hand out meals and supplies but they should really encourage the homeless population to at least help clean up after themselves. They were serving meals on Main, and it was just littered with paper cups and plates all around Logan & Main. They can dive into dumpsters, but can't be bothered to put anything back.
