Alvarado Street at MacArthur Park

This GSV is from August of last year. Have they been added to discourage the street vendors? If so, that's a stylish way of doing that.

Looking at the above building and seeing the (now bricked-up) side windows reminded me of a question I had posed to myself for years.

As it will illustrate the matter better, observe below the side windows of a building on New High St.

gsv

I had noticed that early brick buildings, say pre-1930, had such windows which were not strictly rectangular but which rather were shallowly arched at the top. It suddenly occurred to me that perhaps this was due to the needs of unreinforced masonry construction. I looked into this, and that turns out to be exactly the case. For structural reasons, the arch is needed or the bricks above, with no support due to the hole which the window makes, would press down and the wall would experience some degree of collapse. The arch even has a name: "Jack Arch." When you see these windows, it thus indicates a building of unreinforced masonry, and most likely (in So Cal) dating to before the Long Beach Earthquake of 1933.

I wonder what the last unreinforced masonry building built in Los Angeles was; and I wonder what the last unreinforced masonry building built that is still standing in Los Angeles is (not necessarily the same building!)?

Evidently, these spheres or spherical bollards, serve various purposes, including enhanced security.

There are some bollards on Rodeo Drive.

HalfonProp.

Beverly Press

From Beverly Press [2024]: The city of Beverly Hills in August completed installation of 232 barriers along a busy thoroughfare in the Golden Triangle. The bollards – gray spheres of concrete 39 inches wide – now line the three blocks of Rodeo Drive north of Wilshire Boulevard as well as nearby sections of Brighton Way and Dayton Way.

I don't recall hearing the word "bollard" before... The definition of bollard I looked up refers to them as "posts." Like this one:

Circular ones are described as orb or sphere bollards. Here's a more creative, colorful, use of them as seen on a vendor's site.

Yes, that's where the lagoon was on the Radford Studio Center, formerly CBS Studio Center, lot. (And other names before that.) The building that currently stands there is called the:

In the '80s in a video store where Gilligan's Island was on the screens, I was near a customer talking to his friend. Apparently the guy's last name was Howell. He said to his friend, "The class used to tease me all the time because of this show." His friend said, "Why, did they call you Mr. Howell?" The guy gave a sigh and replied, "...no......they called me 'Lovey.'"

Hey! That's pretty cool, M P. ... I like that they used the same lettering style. Kudos for that.

P.S. Funny story. Ha Ha.

ETA:

In an NLA search I found the Mocambo nightclub closed in June, 1958, and was followed by The Cloister.

I posted this back in 2016:

Quote:
Here's a short video of the strip in 1961, passing by the Crescendo and Interlude on the left at about the 15 second mark.
The youtube page also identifies a place called The Cloister Club. Is that the building right before the Crescendo?

Video Link
Turns out yes, it is, it's also the wing shaped sign you see in the video photo above, on the left, but...there is some sign/banner across the "Cloister" name,
but I can't make out what it says. Anyone else?
_______________________________________________________________

I think I found out what that says:

I found some pages on JazzResearch.com about a TV series called Bobby Troup's Hollywood Record Room.

jazzresearch

On the write up for this broadcast: Hollywood Record Room – May 4, 1961, at the link, there is this:

Carmen McRae’s West Coast stay in 1961 included the Monterey Jazz Festival in the fall and after that an extended engagement at the Club Renaissance opposite the John Coltrane Quintet. The Club Renaissance at 8588 Sunset Boulevard was formerly the Cloister where Al Hirt appeared in April.

So that's what I think that says in the video on the banner covering the Cloister name: Renaissance. Also, there is a marquee you can see on the video as it passes the building and it looks to me like it says RENAISSANCE across the top of it, although I can't make out the bottom lines.

Deep in the recesses of my brain is the ear worm of Al Hirt's single "Java" from 1963.
My dad had the 45 single.

Thank you, Martin Pal.

Now I need to find an ice pick to remove it...
