New AI center now underway

Shovels are in the ground and work is underway on a new AI data centre at Thompson Rivers University, which is expected to be operational by next year.

sounds like the Kamloops Indian band is looking at building a Hotel and Casino by the Police Department by 2030. That would be a fantastic idea if it went ahead.

Build a big casino there with a hotel on top and they'd be literally rolling in cash. As an in-frequent gambler, I definitely support it.

two casinos aren't enough? They used to have one downtown but now it seems that both are out in the suburbs

Here in Victoria we only have one casino even though Victoria is ~4 times the size of Kamloops so it looks like another casino is the last thing Kamloops needs

It's not that Kamloops residents aren't served by enough casinos, but visitors passing by on the highway wouldn't go out of their way to go into the city to play at a casino. In the US, you see casinos often in the middle of nowhere on indian reservations with large parking lots for RV parking with a hotel on top or nearby, it'd be a huge cash injection for them and would likely benefit Kamloops indirectly.

It's up for sale.....again.

Quote:
https://www.castanetkamloops.net/news/Ka...rty-on-Kamloops-Lake-hits-market-for-15M

The 476-acre Tranquille property west of the Kamloops Airport includes the former sanatorium, adjacent land and more than 3,000 metres of Kamloops Lake waterfront — all listed for a little less than $15 million.

Ignition Tranquille Developments had proposed redevelopment plans for the property, which would have transformed it into a community with up to 2,000 homes, a farm, market, winery, hotel and waterfront parks.

Tim McLeod, project manager for Ignition, declined to comment when asked about the sale. He directed questions to real estate agent Mark Lester.
At this point the buildings are almost a total loss. They don't have power. They don't have water. There has been no active security on the property for almost 20 years and they have all been vandalized, stripped of copper and left open to the weather for far too long to do much more than save a few artifacts and level them. They aren't historically listed and they aren't on any sensitive land other than the land reserve.
Anyone looking to buy the place now is looking at a massive cleanup bill.

Indian Casinos exist almost exclusively through a tax loophole allowing them to not be regulated like normal off-reserve establishments. Parts of Canada (Casinorama in Ontario, for example) are like this but in BC all casinos have to be overseen by BCLC and therefore must comply with provincial gaming regulations and taxation, no matter where they are.
Kamloops has the maximum allowable number of casinos and bingo halls (one of each) per population density. Even for a city like Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster or Coquitlam they only have one casino each. The existence of the reservation being outside Kamloops city limits does not allow them to build one or more casinos or bingo halls because it's still the same jurisdiction.

Interesting, I didn't even know that there was a cap. But unsurprising when we live in the least free-market province.

Gee I wonder why the former plans have all failed out there for Cooney bay...

I know for a fact the Kamloops Indian band have had their hands in causing issues out there for over a decade while trying to get the land gifted to them.

The hotel building spree continues. Big Marriot property on Hugh Allan. would be three hotels on the lot, total rooms 420. There must be 1000-1500 rooms in the near future on that one kilometer stretch on Hugh Allan/Rogers Way

I have so much distain for this band, our council, and provincial elected officials that placate to these money and power hungry bands. Of course that's why it's being sold. All the natives do is shut things down and cry victim if they don't get their way.

I'm currently trying to build a house and am being told I have to get an archeological study done before a permit is issued. So I spend 20k for some company to tell me that there's no archeological significance on my property; or I spend 20k for some company to tell me my property is worthless and nothing will be built on it. Absolute fucking lunacy! Either way I'm out a significant amount of money because of this bands corruption. This is on private land within city boundaries. Exactly like this property. Could only imagine the crap this band has made this developer do. People need to wake the fuck up and start pushing back against the KIB and their scam. These are not good people. These are mob tactics, cloaked in truth and reconciliation.

Maybe we should start sticking our fingers across the river and telling them they're on our land and how they should develop and build. Something tells me they wouldn't appreciate it too much.

From 2021 https://cfjctoday.com/2021/06/15/tranqui...600m-to-kamloops-area-economy-developer/

600 million investment and roughly 5.4 million annually to the city in tax revenue is what the loser across the river cost us. This is one development that is going to have a ripple effect through the region. This province is a joke. Why would anyone invest here?

I agree amigo. I would like to see an even partnership. Where both people can prosper and make choices based on what is best for all people involved. Unfortunately, we have one group that seems to only think of themselves but demands we put them ahead of EVERYONE else. That's not equality. That is preferential treatment based on skin color. That's exactly what Canada is supposed to stand against.

Maybe someday, we will all be equal.

I wonder what the brand will be for the Hotel. What we need is a tall beauty built in the City center. A GENUINE signature style hotel.

Kamloops council passes new bylaw to prohibit overnight camping in several areas

The previous bylaw allowed temporary overnight shelters on public lands that are not deemed as prohibited areas, such as playgrounds and sports facilities. The bylaw now includes nature parks, linear parks and open space areas.

...

The legislation also adds buffer zones of 25 metres from playgrounds, waterparks, swimming pools, wading pools on public lands, 50 metres from schools, and four metres from sidewalks, multi-use pathways.

The general idea is that if properly enforced it makes the easement between the river and the rail tracks a no-go at all times, since most of it is now filled with Local Wildlife. Of course, the argument is that where do they go now if they can't seek refuge in certain areas and the shelters are full at night?

That's the fun part: you don't.
You have no fixed address beyond your heroin dealer. Find another town to check the coin pockets of the parking meters. Bob's Flophouse and Pleasure Palace is full.
