Why is this tower getting senior level gov't funding for a building that is primarily focused on housing immigrants? They arrive on our shores and get subsidized housing while dozens of Canadians live on the streets surrounding the building. These subsidized units should be exclusively for Canadian citizens.

You better check the article for clarity:

“We want all income levels to be able to use the project,” he said Wednesday. “Definitely newcomers, particularly refugees, will benefit from it but we also want young adults, people with disabilities, seniors. It’s newcomer-focused but with large eligibility.”

"In total, the project will cost more than $100 million to complete. Though the majority of the money will come from a loan from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s affordable housing fund, Cross Cultural still needs to raise $2 million as part of the agreement with the federal agency."

Just ranting about immigrants is not helpful. And if everyone that moves in is an immigrant, then it frees up space for other buildings.

While there are any Canadians in need of affordable and decent housing, we shouldn't be spending a cent on those who aren't. No one but Canadian citizens should benefit from housing funds.

Demolition now complete and the basement now backfilled. Wonder how long it will be before we see the foundation contractor show up?

Canada Life has donated $250,000 to this affordable housing project.

"Some preparation work on the site of the new development began late last year, with construction now slated to begin in July. CCLC’s goal is to begin occupancy in late 2028."

Looks like they are still very much in the fund raising mode to get this built. The mention of them starting construction this past summer has come and gone. Wonder now if the Medallion 24s building a block west might start before this one see's a shovel in the ground on the now cleared lot. LFP article on the Doorways to Dreams campaign effort.

https://lfpress.com/opinion/columnists/s...newcomers-is-londons-smartest-investment

"That’s what makes Doorways to Dreams so vital. The estimated $100-million development will add 247 units of safe, energy-efficient, mixed-income housing to Old East Village, one of London’s most vibrant, revitalizing neighbourhoods. More than 30 per cent of these homes will be affordable and over 20 per cent will be fully accessible. This isn’t charity. It’s a common sense investment in human capital."

CCLC has filed a complaint with the city because of development charges.

https://pub-london.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=120950

https://pub-london.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=120949

CTV did a story on this with some details about the $3.1M development charge that city staff have calculated which puts the entire project at risk.

https://www.ctvnews.ca/london/article/fi...with-city-hall-over-development-charges/

CBC coverage of the development charge complaint which could kill this project.

LFP finally covers this DC complaint - https://lfpress.com/news/local-news/disp...charge-clouds-affordable-housing-project

CTV news story on the status of this project. Construction may start by end of 2026 although they still have not reached their fund raising goal yet.
