Check out the Regina Retail thread, same thing being mentioned there as well, allegedly.

Whether it's an excuse or not is besides the point. Undoubtedly there is theft happening. It would behoove us not to dismiss that concern out of hand and we should have real consequences for doing stupid shit like that.

Sure, but legal penalties for theft are not within the control of a City, or province for that matter. So the consequences, whatever they are or aren't, don't factor in if we are pinning the closure of 7-11s in Winnipeg on theft and those in BC on the focus for larger more food oriented locations.

It's just lazy reporting and unnecessary pot shots at the city.

On this I fully agree. Seven-11 does appear to be more slanderous and disingenuous towards certain markets while softer on others. Its pretty clear what Sev thinks of Winnipeg and Regina, which is not very much. It also doesn't help that Winnipeg media love to protray the city in a mostly negative light. Add these two facts together and you get the garbage we are reading such as in the aforementioned article.

And before the pile on starts, I'm not saying theft isn't an issue, because we all know it is, however it's happening in almost every city in Canada at nearly plague-like levels. This is a symptom of the justice system which is a Crown matter, as previously mentioned, so there is only so much a city and province can do in that regard.

The 7-11 in Fort Rouge has all the stuff on the shelves as normal, except for - if I recall correctly - Captain Crunch cereal, which instead is a sign saying "please see cashier for assistance". I guess someone has a particular predilection.

No Frills will open in that space.

Jurisdictionally you are correct that the criminal law is constitutionally the exclusive jurisdiciton of the federal government under the enumerated powers in s. 91. That, however, doesn't quite capture what I am getting at. Theft is already a criminal code offence. However, the way that the policing is done is not the federal government's responsibility. In addition, most of the actual prosecution of these types of offences happens at the provincial court level (administered by the province). The criminal code provides plenty of ammunition for judges to sentence people with. So sentencing is not explicitly something the province can have an influence on, but it certainly could be something that is practically the case. That said, the legal system as a whole would need to adjust the way it adjudicates sentencing to make deterence effective.

I heard Weston foods will be returning to the site after a 40+ year absence. I think they may have kept ownership over it when they relocate north on McPhillips in the 80s.

After this McPhillips store they will be starting the No Frills on St Mary's and Dakota in the old Family Foods store later this summer.

I guess Spirit of Halloween will now have to look for a new location for St. Vital for 2026.

EDIT

I spoke too soon, there are reports in social media today (Facebook) about a Spirit of Halloween sign going back up on that space for 2026

Has this been confirmed? I noticed the for lease sign has been taken down so this fits your statement haha!

Facebook group (Old St. Vital & Surrounding Area) has a picture of a Spirit of Halloween sign being put up at that location so any other development would not happen until after the start of November when the remaining stock and fixtures get shipped out.

I went to the new Princess Auto today and that store is huge. I ended up parking on a side street near the city east site public works site and walked over. They had security guards acting as flag people on Panet to allow vehicles in and out of the lot

I had heard on CJOB news that there people camping out in the lot after midnight to be some of first ones in the store when it opened at 7am.

I see that there is 13,000 +/- square feet of space for sublet in the FreshCo at Kildonan Crossing.

It appears to be unused from the rental listing, and has been there when Sobey's closed down the Safeway and converted the site to a FreshCo.

I wonder what type of tenant that will allowed into that space. I was sort of surprised to see the FreshCo/Dollarama combo going into the former Safeway in Niakwa Village as they do have an overlap of some food products.

Dollarama also took up the remaining space at the Freshco on Mcphillips and Jefferson they seem to compliment each other.

I wonder if the space was first offered to Dollarama and they passed on it hence the sublet sign on the building. They have a new large store in Kildonan Place.

Or because there is another dollar store brand a few units over, and they have the rights for a dollar store in the complex.

If anything it could be the Dollar Tree in the former SAAN space has an exclusive clause that blocked Dollarama. Dollarama would literally open on all four corners of an intersection if there was available space to do so. In addition to the mall location they also have a location in the old Food Barn. Another example is how they have a store next to Ikea and across Sterling Lyon by Coop. It seems there is literally no such thing, at least yet, for them as market saturation.

There's an abundance of dollar stores in the area. Trust me, my wife loves it lol "Oh this dollarama doesn't have it, let's try the other 2 just 5 minutes away. If that doesn't work, let's hit the dollar tree that's in the middle."

I do find it odd there's a Dollarama in the mall, and directly across Regent is another Dollarama.
