From Wikipedia:

The Crescendo was a West Hollywood music venue located at 8572 Sunset Boulevard. It opened in 1954, along with the Interlude upstairs, and ran until 1964.

It was primarily a jazz club, but also hosted comics.

BTW. I set the playback speed to 0.25 to make it a little easier to keep up.

It is still there. If you go back to the multiple Google Street Views in 2014 you can see several stages of them ruining/adding on/covering it up.

i remember as a kid the was a nightclub with the "Hip Hypnotist" her name was Pat Collins at she appeared somewhere around here on the Sunset Strip. Anyone else remember ?

Flyingwedge, Thanks for finding the two drive-ins I had asked about. Double K seems to be lost to time but I can add a bit about Jack's. At some point it got a name change:

As Wray's, it showed up in the original 1974 film Gone in 60 Seconds and also another pretty obscure film Hometown U.S.A., an American Graffiti knockoff directed by Max Baer Jr. (Jethro), released in 1979. Looking at aerials, the building was demolished around 1990 but the Wray's sign in the parking lot survived beyond that until the property was redeveloped.

I've also been trying to find the L.A. Mod Shop, but no luck. I'm beginning to wonder if the photographer just wrote that on the slide as words in the then current vernacular at the time.

Yes, this particular video is always worth viewing. I like watching the guy run up the ladder on the Shell sign. And seeing the Whisky A Go-Go's previous incarnation as The Party, among other things.

But...The Mod Squad premiered in 1968 and the video is from '64.

The neon sign hidden in the bushes: Ysabel. According to one site: "Ysabel in West Hollywood is a stylish dining spot featuring a cozy alfresco courtyard, globally-inspired dishes and a delicious cocktails menu."

What the interior looked like surprised me! I was going to post one photo, but "one" didn't seem to do it justice. I mean, there's an outside patio, a lighted staircase, lamps on the bar...etc.!

Tragic story about actress Gloria Dickson. When I was a teenager, and very interested in Hollywood history, my mother told me that a girl named Gloria Dickson was a year ahead of her at Long Beach (Ca.) High School & got into the movies but later burned to death in a house fire.
You may have seen Gloria in "They Made Me A Criminal" with John Garfield from 1939 (the movie was filmed in 1938). She was strikingly good-looking. I recall reading that she became an alcoholic, and by 1943 her face was rather bloated and she looked hard & tough. She was only 27 when she died. Her first marriage to makeup artist Perc Westmore, had ended "due to drinking, violence, and infidelity," according to John Michael Howson, author of a book about Hollywood tragedies.
On a slightly related note, another family member had a similar experience with a high school classmate going to Hollywood. My aunt attended Stadium High School in Tacoma with a girl named Donna Mae Tjaden, who went on to become actress Janis Paige. Paige had a long, successful career and died at age 101.

Haslam Terrace is off of Sunset Plaza Dr., just east of the "bird" streets.

"In the 1940s, Dickson’s film career waned and she mostly appeared in B-Movies such as The Affairs of Jimmy Valentine (1942) and Lady of Burlesque (1943). She struggled with her weight and alcoholism, which further complicated her professional and personal life.

In 1944, Dickson married former boxer William Fitzgerald, to whom she remained married until her untimely passing. Fitzgerald also once happened to be a bodyguard for actress Jean Harlow.

Dickson tragically died in a fire on April 10, 1945. She was residing in a Los Angeles, California, home that she was renting from actor Sidney Toler. The fire was caused by an unextinguished cigarette that she left behind. It ignited a chair on the ground floor while she was napping upstairs. Sadly, she and her pet boxer were found in the bathroom, as it was assumed that she tried to escape via the bathroom window. She ultimately passed from asphyxiation and had suffered first- and second-degree burns. She was 27 years old."


The house was repaired later in '45.....





It was demolished for a new home in 1981.

e_r, I was looking into the "L.A. Mod Shop" question. I have a question fundamental to this: How certain is it that it is L.A. Mod Shop? I have a suspicion that it is C.A. Mod Shop: Observe:

In all instances, of which the above is just one, the writer makes a sharp angle and straight upright for undoubted L (as in "Leslie"). The letter in question attending to Mod Shop tends in all instances to be half-circles.

Now, what C.A. might be is a mystery to me, and even more of a mystery to A.I., which thinks it denotes either "circa" or "California." The "C" could be "Central," and I'd like to think "Central America" is involved; but somehow I don't think there has ever been a mod shop in Central America. I give up! But I do think that's a "C." Perhaps "C.A." are the initials of the owner or manager...?
