Bottle reuse has been around a lot longer than blue bin recycling. Not sure which wheel is being re-invented. As for Quebec, the grocery stores DO participate in bottle returns and they just recently implemented deposits on bottles did they not?

I recall my highschool biology teacher lamenting the loss of the stubby and writing the MP of the time that it was going to cause the loss of reusability. Took 40 years but here were are.
I agree. I'd go as far as demanding consistency for grocery products as well (pickle jars, salad dressings, milk bottles, the works). Have a dozen models total to cover all products and reuse those bottles.

Maybe at the bigger Beer Store locations but the smaller ones have had terrible selection. Looking at the online stock at my local location for Ontario Craft, they have two Muskoka offerings, one Nickel Brook offering and one Amsterdam offering. There's a better selection at any of the gas stations I'd pass on my way there.

The other issue with Beer Stores is that because freshness is important for the IPAs I prefer, I won't buy beer at any of the counter service locations because I can't check the dates on the beer before purchasing. I've been the Beer Stores that have had beer on the shelves that was older than the store itself.

Before I get off topic on the 299 Carling thread, I figured I'd respond here.

With the massive success of the Lyon Food Basics, I'm surprised we haven't yet seen a spike of interest in opening more urban grocery stores. Maybe it's too soon, maybe there's no space big enough available, but I have no doubt Little Italy could support one at each end of Preston, another in Centretown around the old Greyhound site, one in the southern part of Sandy Hill under the Robertson towers. LeBreton will certainly need its own.

Wow... a Costco gas bar is coming to the Costco Business Centre on Cyrville Road, just a few km from the Ogilvie Road Costco gas bar. I guess it's handier to the 417.

It will include a 24-position fuelling station in the northeast quadrant of the site (18 of which will be constructed now with 6 intended for future expansion), a parking reduction from 603 to 478 parking stalls, and site improvements including a new site access and landscaping.

That corner is wasted space, so I'm ok with this, but Innes in this area at rush hour is already hell. At the same time, it might alleviate Blair a slight bit.

At least Kanata has their own Costco. There's a serious need for another Costco in Orleans since the one at Blair is a gongshow all the time. Cyrville getting pretty busy as well, but doesn't carry everything a regular Costco does.

Personally of the mind that new gas stations shouldn't be allowed within the city limits if there already is one within 10km. Owning a gas powered vehicle can come with some inconvenience.

A liquor license application was submitted this morning for a "Scaddabush Italian Kitchen & Bar" at the Kanata Centrum, 625 Kanata Ave. Unit E1. This appears to be the old Fat Tuesday's location.

So it’s fair to say that we will be seeing a Sysco truck backing up into the loading dock on a regular basis

Yeah, seems like a very slightly upscale East Side Marios from the web pics and nothing that Fratellis or Cabotto's needs to worry about. Glad to see the space get used though.

They promise When it comes to our scratch kitchen, our approach is guided by a very simple rule: anytime we can make it ourselves, we do. It’s an Italian thing – and frankly, it’s just more delicious that way. We pride ourselves on authenticity and every year, our culinary team travels to Italy for inspiration and education to ensure our menu stays true to its roots.
Scratch in house pasta, pizza dough and mozza.

I'm sure there is wiggle room in the 'anytime we can'

I'm assuming it's just a new corridor with stores already announced on each side. The stores in question:

Pottery Barn
West Elm
Dollarama
William Sonoma

Rideau also getting a very small expansion on Nicholas with the Registrar apartments.

Did we ever see an official statement about these rumored stores?

It's not a rumour. According to the City of Ottawa Building Permits for December 2025:

The Rideau Centre is undertaking base building work for future tenants on the 3rd floor - Pottery Barn, West Elm, Williams Sonoma, Dollarama, and additional storage.

Other permitted tenant fitups include:
  • Abercrombie and Fitch, Unit 291
  • Telus, Unit 0136
  • Browns Shoes, Unit 0271
  • HeyTea, Unit 207A
  • Steve Madden, Unit 259

2026 Permits:
