Here's the other end. We see it was built to also accommodate rail service.

I saw a number of acts there - Lou Reed, Bananarama, Spandau Ballet...

The roof of the Universal Amphitheatre was installed earlier than I thought it had been:

The roof was added to the Universal Amphitheatre in 1982. The venue closed in 1980 for a major two-year renovation following noise complaints from nearby residents and to enable year-round indoor concerts. The venue first opened in 1972 as an open-air venue with Jesus Christ Superstar.

Universal Amphitheatre (1972-2005).
Gibson Amphitheatre (2005-13).
Remodeled and converted into an indoor theatre in 1982.
Demolished on September 25, 2013.

Before the roof was added I recall seeing The Doobie Brothers and Cher. Afterwards...I missed Frank Sinatra, but recall seeing Rick Springfield, Harry Connick, Jr., Diana Ross, Erasure...?

The Studio Tour link has a few other selected photos, including of the demolition.

I've never known Los Angeles Harbor very well.

Using the map below I think I found 'our' building / the one in the 1954 photograph. (shown above)

I think it's MU1, right?

I might have answered my own question.

Maybe Matson didn't have a 'dock' per say.

You see, I just happened upon this 1930s image of the Port of Los Angeles on eBay.

I've placed a star near what - I believe to be- a Matson Line ship... (at lower right)

eBay

And MS 1 is visible in the upper left-hand corner. (I circled it for ya. )

East Basin area, probably around where B3 is on your map…but this place has changed dramatically over time.

Here's a place we haven't seen in a long time.

Currently on eBay

I don't even remember where it was located.

The Matson Terminal was located at berths 195-197, immediately opposite the Cailifornia Yacht Marina.

Here's the terminal and marina on a 1960 aerial.

mil.library.ucsb.edu

That would be in the blue A1 section on e_r's map.

We visited the area back in 2014. The stock yards were at the junction of S Downey Road and Exchange Avenue. I posted some pictures here. FW's follow-up here shows the entrance above.

As FW's link, just referred to, shows in its picture of the monuments to be found at the site, this is the location of the Battle of La Mesa (the battle has various names), and I'd guess that bullets and other paraphernalia are still to be found in the area. Here's the 1847 depiction of the battle by William H. Meyers (public domain). The battle was the last military resistance of the Californios to the Yankees.

What Year Was Photo Taken?

Lion dance in New Chinatown

A crowd in New Chinatown at 463 Ginling [sic] Way watching a lion dance in front of Dun Sow Hong, later known as Mu Bros. Gifts. Stanley Mu and little Lily Mu stand in front of the doorway. Mr. Soo Hoo is the heavy-set man on the far right edge of the photo in the white shirt and tie.

LAPL

LAPL also has a better picture Lily Mu and her brother in front of the counter at their father's shop here.

Excerpt from a 2023 Chinese Historical Society of Southern California newsletter:
In Remembrance of Stanton Mu

June 3, 1927 – December 24, 2022

Stanton Mu, a Charter Member of CHSSC, was born in Los Angeles in
1927. The construction of Union Station forced his family to move from
Old Chinatown to East Kensington Road in Echo Park. His father’s herb
store was relocated to Gin Ling Way in New Chinatown. There it became
a gift shop named Mu Bros.
What year was photo taken? Reason I ask is the man on far left above white shirted lady looks like my Uncle. He was an LAPD Officer and was body guard and driver for 3 different Mayors starting in early 1950's. He would be there if the Mayor was there.

“Coney Highland” again! Seems good reference shots for Universal City and Studios are not all that plentiful. But this is the Cahuenga Pass somewhere in the 1920-1930 era (if the source is correct) which might capture Universal’s backlot on the left edge with that odd cone sitting between two of the ridges which ran into their properties? The photo was apparently gifted from a private collection and turned uo via Calisphere IIRC.

The full view:

via Calisphere.

The cropped close-up of the left area:

So, could this be the same spot or am I way up a dry canyon creek?

The photo is undated, but the text I posted mentions the herb store being relocated when Union Station was built. The Dun Sow Hong Co appears in the CDs at 306 Marchessault Street until 1937 and then at 463 Gin Ling Way from 1939. LAPL also has this picture of Lily Mu looking a little younger which they date at circa 1938. I think that would make the Lion Dance photo around 1939/40.
