Looks like it's going to be make-or-break time soon for The Port of Churchill project.

Two items online in the news today: one is on a study to find the optimal route for shipping in and out of Churchill:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/...chill-manitoba-northern-europe-9.7166672

...one on the Carney government's apparent need for quick action on LNG shipping:

https://globalnews.ca/news/11806964/fede...ace-for-port-of-churchill-project-kinew/

I know Wab Kinew has actively pursued this project and presented it as a great boost to the northern/Manitoba economy. I'm not sure it would be a "lottery win" like suddenly finding vast quantities of commercially valuable natural resources underground, but I can see how it could help the economy. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens over the next year or so.

As you said, the real "lottery win" for Manitoba will be mining. We just need the infrastructure (large-scale rail lines, shipping ports, storage facilities, and ice-breakers) from northern Manitoba to Churchill to support it. Getting LNG sent to the port of Churchill is a good first step towards building some of this infrastructure.

The feds want it done in 4 years. I do not see that being doable. I work front line construction. For example, I worked at the St Boniface Hospital ER expansion which took over 2 years to complete. I worked at the Keeyask Hydro Station build. That took 10 years start to finish including earthworks and infrastructure in a remote area.

Now consider a project with several times the area and many moving parts. Does not seem feasible without a military level effort. Nothing (that we know of) has even been designed or conceptualized, never mind funding agreements.

Here’s hoping! But I am not expecting it will happen in that tight a timeline. 10 years maybe. Even then.

I read that to mean construction started by 2030.

If they skip all permitting, consultation, and red tape. It could be done close to the 2030 timeline. And forget about cost efficiency. They could have the design part of it done within 6 to 12 months and start construction while still finalizing other details of the design. Ie: you need an in water port expansion, Build a large generic deepwater berth where it needs to go. And fit the rest to it. Same for an LNG facility. you can build an oversized plant without worrying about optimizing for cost efficiency. Same for pipeline. Find pipe that is over doing it, but available, and start laying pipe. Where is the pipeline going? Wherever the Feds say it'll go. Your property be damned. Construction schedule? Needs multiple crews working multiple shifts everyday. Saying all that. I don't see it happening. The wording in the article says shipping LNG by 2030.

Niverville news
The government has designated $9.65 million towards the reconstruction of Highway 311.

Continuing in the vein of this provincial and municipal partnership, the province will turn over full responsibility for this section of Highway 311 within town limits to the Town of Niverville at the completion of the project.

Construction, in its entirety, will include 3.5 kilometres of roadway

“There is a lot of interest in the community and in the couple of years it will take to build this [roadway] we will see significant investment in business and in housing,” said Dyck. “A population that is currently 8,000, in ten to 15 years’ time, it will be closer to 15,000 to 20,000, and we will be Manitoba’s newest city.”

I same that announcement recently. It somewhat goes against some posters opinions that it should go the other way. Such as the province taking back responsibility for PTH 59 in Winnipeg. In this case, it gives the town more control and flexibility over what happens in the town. But might require them to spend more money on maintenance or repairs in the future.

the town is extremely progressive so it's better to be in their hands than the province. they re-juvenated numerous buildings on Main street plus built more strip malls on the outskirts area. this is main street buildings all walkable. great town!

Hopefully the upgrades to Niverville's main street will include some streetscaping and maybe a middle median or some lane shrinkage of some sort.

It's ridiculously wide and bleak currently...which probably was originally intended to accommodate folks who would drive their grain trucks and tractors to town.

Based on the news article,. it sounds like most of the major work is on the west end. With widening to 4 lanes and a roundabout (I assume for new developments in that end). The rest sounds like asphalt resurfacing of existing roads. Which by Winnipeg standards still look to be in great shape lol.

crazy seeing that streetview from 2024 and how much has changed from 2020 and even now, there more retail, apartments all up along the south side.

I'm currently in town 2-3 times a week.

Cargill opens Regina canola crush plant serving Manitoba growers

The facility will source canola from a 300- to 350-km radius, giving western Manitoba producers a new buyer as it ramps to one million tonnes per year

One Billion plant? Hmmm?

Original budget was $350 million, yes they said they went over budget but definitely not $1 Billion.

Breathe in breath breathe breathe out breathe out go get yourself a strong coffee, no cream no sugar not from Tim Hortons. Sit down look around and relax. Yesterday was $1 billion. You have a problem with Regina getting a lot of big billion dollar companies and the red leaf plant is going to be $1 billion also, are you going to go wild and throw a fit? Also the $1.7 billion data centre but wait just wait. There’s more to come you’re going to go through the roof. Enjoy your night hun sleep well we love you

Arctic Gateway says they are in talks with Eldorado Gold, new owners of the big copper mine opening this year at McIlvenna Bay, SK., west of Flin Flon. They do not have a smelter, so will need to ship concentrated ore out.

According to this, the concentrated ore will be shipped by up to 19 trucks per day to the Hudson Bay Railway railhead in MB. It would make sense for some of that to go to Churchill if the infrastructure is there.
