Absolutely, what an embarrasment they have become, they got the leader they deserve.

Has nothing to do with Musk and everything to do with the privileged identity politics of the NDP that are disgustingly cringeworthy: equity cards, gender identity cards, narcissistic bullying over ‘wrong’ pronouns. This party is completely out of touch with reality. After this past weekend’s spectacle, they’ve shown exactly why they’ve earned their downward spiral into irrelevance in the House of Commons.

I'm not defending everything Avi Lewis might have said or stands for, partially because I'm only aware of a fraction of his policies. I suppose we'll hear more as time goes on, but if media pundits can be believed, there will be some friction between segments of the party, and they will have a difficult time staking out a centrist position in the country, if that's their goal.

As for "X", it's ownership by Elon Mush has a lot to do with the kind of things that get posted there. Since his purchase of Twitter, that platform's user base has shifted significantly to become a hub for conservative, far-right and self-proclaimed "citizen journalists". If posts on "X" largely condemn Avi Lewis and demean the entire country, as some have suggested, it's highly probable that those posters share an agenda to insult and discredit any political position that promotes any kind of wealth distribution or ecological stewardship, whatever it's value might be. That's not political commentary, that's warping the narrative towards an extremely narrow and self-serving view.

The videos mentioned by Wpgstvsouth94 from the NDP convention are publicly available for anyone to watch, regardless of the platform. They're not 'warped narratives'; they're embarrassing raw footage of delegates arguing over prioritized speakers based on gender identity, race, and other identity categories, complete with points of privilege raised when a 'cis woman' was called ahead of someone holding a 'gender equity card', whatever that is.

That's not conservative spin, it's the party's own procedural rules on full display and these moments went viral because they look insular, performative, and detached from the majority of Canadians and the world.

I'm surprised Wab would so overtly celebrate his support and connection to Avi.....Wab is a populist, not a left-wing ideologue....he governs by whatever polls well, not by what his political dogma directs him towards.....he's not an NDP in anything but the logo....seems dangerous to connect to someone with polarizing non-mainstream views.

My big fear in the next few years with Wab is this exact populism.

He won over a lot of voters with shit like the fuel tax holiday. We're heading into what might be years of expensive fuel. I wonder if he'll be able to avoid the temptation to get back in the business of trying to control pump prices.

If the video Wpgstvsouth94 mentioned simply posted as "this is what happened at the NDP convention", then yes, absolutely, it's not spin. People can make up their minds whether they like what's being said or not.

Here's my concern: the fact that the video was posted on "X" which, as I wrote before, has become a hub for far-right commenters. In general, people who watch posts on "X" prefer confirmation of their existing opinions, rather than considering differing opinions. "X"'s algorithms are designed for high engagement, emotionally charged content that aligns with their audience's pre-existing viewpoints. This suggests to me that the convention video was posted as fodder for outrage and condemnation among that audience. It may not be "spin", but it certainly qualifies as an "echo chamber".

Wpgstvsouth94 seemed to think the footage meant "other countries are laughing at us right now" as a result of this posting, and I suspect that was probably the desire of people on this specific platform. I would suspect the same if the video appears on Fox News (which it may have already). These outlets generally aren't interested in discussing the relative merits or faults with differing opinions as much as producing content designed to deride and condemn any view different from their own

To contrast, seeing the video on a generally mainstream news media like CTV, CBC or Global, even with opinion commentary from their inevitable panel of talking heads, would most likely be presented as news, rather than propaganda. If the convention were covered on something like the PBS Newshour, I'm sure the information would be presented as dryly and uninterestingly as possible.

My guess is that Wab prefers to communicate publicly in a more friendly manner than confrontational. It may be along the lines of "you attract more flies with honey than with vinegar".

The highlights of that NDP convention were pure comedy gold. Gender equity cards, having to declare yourself a white male/female....I this and I that. It seemed people wanted to talk more about themselves then about the party goals. The NDP have morphed in the past decade plus into a party of individual identities than one of the working class. See the Palestinian flag at the event. Imagine what Ed Broadbent would think of this party if he were still alive today?

The Conservative party must hate what they see as the further the NDP removes itself from reality, the less seats they will likely gain in the next election. People will gravitate to the libs likely giving them the majority of seats in the next election.

IF Wab were to run for a federal party in the future it won't be the NDP, it will be the liberals.

This, exactly. I think Wab was enjoying the national spotlight. But I guarantee in time Wab will but heads with Avi on it the issues, eg natural resource development and the development of Churchill. Luckily, the Federal NDP won’t be relevant on the national political scene anytime soon.

Wab slandered the crap out of the USA and definitely not welcoming to have any USA business in MB despite spending $500k on a US office. It's truly embarrassing his behavior.

Who cares what platform they were viewed on, the raw videos exist independently of any platform and the clips speak for themselves. Try watching the numerous clips first and you'll see why other countries are laughing at us right now. It's not because of an X algorithm, right wing propaganda or 'echo chamber outrage', it's because the NDP's activist base are a bunch of out of touch lunatics. Optics like these, spending significant time on identity politics while the country deals with housing, costs, strained US relations and economic pressures, explain why the videos landed so poorly with a wide audience far more than any supposed platform bias.
People can judge the footage for themselves. If mainstream coverage presents it more 'dryly,' that's fine, but it doesn't change what happened in the room.

Wab is absolutely a populist that is loving the national attention, and most insiders will tell you that his focus on real, less shiny but more tangible policy for Manitobans is virtually non-existent. Trueviking's comments about Wab leaning into whatever polls best are spot on. Wab knows that right now, there are two things that will play well with most Manitobans: mentioning healthcare and displaying anti-American sentiment.

Wab's more focused on trying to "make provincial NDP history" by winning a rural seat than actually governing with focus and intent. His entire "economic development" focus is entirely on the Port of Churchill, which most adults in the room recognize is an absolute pipe dream that will go nowhere, so right now it's simply a local buzzword to make us all feel like there is potential and hope, when the reality is we will never have a substantial port in the north that rivals Vancouver, Montreal, or Halifax. The economics and infrastructure just isn't there and never will be without massive government subsidies (aka tax dollars). But to the average Joe, putting a port in the north makes sense, government just "needs to do something about it."

Meanwhile there are figurative burning dumpster fires everywhere across the province that need to be dealt with that require provincial intervention, especially in Winnipeg, but he's too busy posting catchy videos in Instagram/Tiktok, catering to centrists in rural MB, and talking about how we recruited like 10 doctors to Manitoba over the last 3 years (WOW!) as if that's some major fix, while ignoring everything else. And the best part? It's all paying off. He's consistently the most liked Premiere in Canada, grabs national headlines when normally Manitoban is considered irrelevant on the national stage, and people are even talking about him being a good candidate in federal politics (spoiler alert: Wab's history will destroy him at a national level despite him evading it at a provincial level).

That's not to say Wab isn't necessarily doing an okay job, he is. And he's leagues ahead of the alternative. But I'm not happy with the lack of progress on key files and his absent-mindedness on real issues that aren't sexy or the average voter doesn't care about, but I suppose that's just how politics goes these days.

Other countries are laughing at us because of what our fringe 4th-place political party is doing at their convention? Why on earth would they even know or care? It's just the classic rage-bait crap that conservatives fall for so easily. It's a complete nothing burger that only becomes news because useful idiots like yourself fall for the rage bait and start sharing it all over social media squawking OMG LOOK AT THE LIBS OMGGGG. Well done, you did your job, good dog.

This is not even an officially recognized party in the house anymore and you're acting like they represent the country on the world stage. Seems like you need some perspective. America has a rapist pedophile for a president and you think pronouns are embarassing?

I'm sorry but it's naive to believe that how and where a news item is presented has no impact on how it's received. There is overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Here's a just a few articles that discuss the topic:

I wouldn't have put it quite like this, but I agree, the notion the "the whole world is laughing at us" came across as desperate hyperbole rather than considered opinion. One can disagree with Avi Lewis's platform without resorting to juvenile put-downs like "out of touch lunatics".

I remember a friend of mine having an app that shows news articles regarding the same subject, but from different media outlets, and tells you the left / right / center bias of the article before you read it so you know what to expect before you consume it. I'll have to ask him what the app was called again.
