Geller said the lot and surrounding area was part of the proposed Johnston Terminals redevelopment that went into receivership in the mid-1980s.

I think it was the development right next to the bridge. Leg in Boot Square etc.

Old False Creek Area 6 Phase 3 development plan that mentions Johnston Terminals.

New Olympic Village Elementary School for 630 students approved by Vancouver City Council

Quote:
Vancouver City Council has unanimously approved a rezoning application that clears the way for the long-awaited Olympic Village Elementary School to move forward — with one additional storey to accommodate more students in one of the city’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods.

They say it went from 2 to 3 stories. But the renderings are showing 4 floors plus roof top usage

It’s Daily Hive, they make so many mistakes you can’t rely on anything they say.

The school is approved at four storeys.

630 is pretty big for an elementary school but it's obviously needed in the area. I think it would be near impossible to build a 300-student school then try to find another spot nearby for a 2nd one.

I wonder if they need a better plan for dropoff/pickups?

Overwhelming majority of families live close enough to walk or bike to school, parking won't really be an issue.

Worst case, they just need to limit street parking during certain hours on that block, and implement some traffic-calming measures on Columbia. It'll be a bigger task to get people to stop driving dead centre down the street at 50-60 km/h.

Nobody is going 50-60 down those roads, even on 1st Ave. Those are narrow streets.

There's a roundabout there that will be a mess during drop off, but yes most kids won't get dropped off. That said it's about double the size of a typical elementary school, so there will be traffic.

Extremely narrow. The City has had fencing set up for months along the east bound side of 1st that barely leaves enough room for a car to get by. I'm sure some people have scraped the side of their car.

The school isn't even on 1st. It's on Columbia between Athlete's Way and Walter Hardwick.

They actually have a catchment map/student location by grade level and it is pretty OV based so I guess they'll be fine with 5 or so dedicated dropoff/pickup spots.

I live here (hi neighbour) and unfortunately LOTS of drivers speed down Walter Hardwick, Athletes, and Columbia. And I'd say 1st is even worse for speeders (when not shut down for sewer work). The whole neighbourhood needs traffic calming.

The roundabout there was never really necessary and could be removed as part of road work to prepare the block for the school to open.

Unless it's super tight the type of idiot who does 50 on those kinds of streets don't yield in roundabouts and burn through them.

Yes, these are the same people who cut across these roundabouts driving the wrong direction to save a few seconds.

Not on its own, it's not. Some mixture of speed bumps, curb bulges, modal filtering, narrower streets, better signage, posted speed limits, and four-way stops are needed as well. If you look back, the entire OV neighbourhood was supposed to effectively be a woonerf with pedestrian priority and 30km/h speed limits north of 1st. But the city half-assed it and this is the result. People speed, run stop signs, drive down the middle of the road, blow through crosswalks, etc. and that will definitely need to be addressed for the school, there is no question.

The current sewer work is a great example of how most drivers don't respect road design and are programmed to drive faster than they should and put their convenience ahead of other road users. The block of Columbia between 1st/2nd is narrower than usual right now with fencing and equipment on the street; instead of slowing down and giving enough space for two directions of traffic, people fly down the middle of the road at regular speed without any regard. Part of that is frustration with the inconvenience of road construction, but it doesn't make the behaviour any less reckless.

Imagine how it will be if those calming measures aren't permanently installed in front of and around the school. One roundabout won't do anything by itself. The roundabout isn't necessary at that particular location because only two streets connect to it.

Most elementary schools have speed bumps on the main roads beside them. They could easily be added to this block.

Currently, this is an out of the way corner that sees minimal traffic, and the roads are narrow. I'm in the area a lot and just don't see the speeding you reference here.

I do see people driving to fast on 1st Ave on ocassion, that's it though.

Every local street adjacent to a school that's eligible for speed humps has them in Vancouver so far as I know. It looks like they've opted for a raised crossing at Columbia St and Athlete's Way instead, but that'd provide the same function.
