Yes, these are the same people who cut across these roundabouts driving the wrong direction to save a few seconds.

Not on its own, it's not. Some mixture of speed bumps, curb bulges, modal filtering, narrower streets, better signage, posted speed limits, and four-way stops are needed as well. If you look back, the entire OV neighbourhood was supposed to effectively be a
woonerf with pedestrian priority and 30km/h speed limits north of 1st. But the city half-assed it and this is the result. People speed, run stop signs, drive down the middle of the road, blow through crosswalks, etc. and that will definitely need to be addressed for the school, there is no question.
The current sewer work is a great example of how most drivers don't respect road design and are programmed to drive faster than they should and put their convenience ahead of other road users. The block of Columbia between 1st/2nd is narrower than usual right now with fencing and equipment on the street; instead of slowing down and giving enough space for two directions of traffic, people fly down the middle of the road at regular speed without any regard. Part of that is frustration with the inconvenience of road construction, but it doesn't make the behaviour any less reckless.
Imagine how it will be if those calming measures aren't permanently installed in front of and around the school. One roundabout won't do anything by itself. The roundabout isn't necessary at that particular location because only two streets connect to it.
