looking back I actually quite liked the stacked boxes design. I liked the fact that it blended in with the other buildings when viewed from the memorial. It was high enough (in my opinion) and certainly looked imposing as the design wasn't broken up with the open areas like the new tower - I actually think that's quite an important feature considering how imposing those original towers were, they certainly had an Aura about them that was a little spooky but that's what made them so iconic

The original foster design with the Diamonds was iconic for sure, although I do think perhaps wouldn't have aged as well over the decades (I know this is probably going against popular opinion)

2031 will be the 100th birthday party for Larry Silverstein AND the Empire State Building.

What a year.

We should be looking at construction this spring or Q3. That's the best news I think. Finally!

Seeing this tower rising is like seeing the virgin mary in the flesh. A divine miracle.

I personally am happy that this gap will finally be filled in, but I agree that the design is super generic and is not inspiring. But if it can't be iconic, at least it's not tacky. So there's that.
The original WTC complex was objectively generic. It became iconic as a backdrop. Also, memories from 9/11 seared into our collective consciousness will not allow it to be anything less than sacred. I like the design they went with much better than the BIG version, or any of the other post diamond Foster designs. This version is the best. The one with the spire was the weakest imo.

According to the renders there will be no spire for WTC 2. That make the roof height 1,226 foot tall.

Exactly. Among the possibilities, "bland/generic but not offensive-looking" is actually pretty good. Not all towers can be iconic.

Does anyone know if the highlighted areas along Greenwich Street show the building's steel columns?

I am so happy!

It took them long enough. Now they need to get 5 W.T.C. off the ground too.

As has been stated before, everything has been built up to street level.

I wonder if there are second thoughts about 5 WTC since office demand in NYC has strengthened considerably and there are few sites downtown to build new office towers (are there even any?). 5 WTC will probably still be built as all- residential, but if they were deciding today on the site, I doubt they would consider residential.

The west facade is this towers’s most boring, and yet it’s the one that’s most commonly shown. I’d like to see more from the east, north, and south.

Xing,

Can you post a rendering from the north and east perspectives?

Xing,

Can you create a rendering of the latest version from this angle?

Amex plans for Two World Trade Center is a psychological coup for Downtown

By Steve Cuozzo
March 1, 2026

Quote:
Conde Nast’s lease to anchor One World Trade Center, signed in 2011, affirmed that Downtown was at last brushing off the emotional carnage of 9/11 that lingered long after the physical rubble was removed.

American Express’ announced decision to move to Two World Trade Center is equally momentous. It marked a psychological coup for Downtown, which enjoyed its strongest leasing performance in 2025 since before the pandemic and even bested mighty Midtown. Larry Silverstein will build the tower for Amex, which assumed his lease from the PA and will own and occupy it.

The project to be finished in 2031 gives Downtown its own supertall to rival the ones uptown, more than 1,200 feet high and wearing the imprimatur of great architect Norman Foster. “It’s more than a morale boost, it’s an adrenaline shock,” exulted a downtown broker who didn’t want to be identified. “Everybody here was waiting for this for a long time.”
Quote:
The complex’s unfinished state brought back miserable memories of the struggle to replace the original World Trade Center. Elected officials and bureaucrats, the Port Authority, leaseholder Silverstein and rival architects bitterly and publicly squabbled. Most of the media hated Silverstein and howled against reconstruction, especially the New York Times. It’s worth noting that the Times, which gave space to potholes after the snowstorm, has yet to publish a word about the Amex deal which is merely of epochal historical and economic importance.

Of course Silverstein mostly prevailed. He built towers three and four as well as Seven World Trade Center across the street — all fine works of architecture. He also got the “Freedom Tower” off the ground before handing it off to developer Douglas Durst and the PA.

Only Tower Two got away from him. But Silverstein never gave up hope of building it in his lifetime. At age 94, his dream came true last week after what sources said was fully a three-year effort to get Amex, the PA, and Silverstein on the same page.

So let’s give credit to the prime movers. Stephen J. Squeri, Amex chairman and CEO since 2018, lent his muscle and negotiating prowess to one of the most complex land-use deals ever.
