It has been foggy for nearly three days. Looks like we're only getting a couple millimeters of rain today, I was hoping we would get more to wash away all the leftover crud from the the snow.

Coldest weather of the entire winter so far, should warm up to -10 by the weekend at least. Wonder if we will get another blast in March given our fairly mild winter so far.

My snowblower got a workout yesterday. Its down one battery but I have never had to recharge to finish what I normally do on one charge.

Some good drifting around as well.

Funny though that the warmest place I was yesterday and today is arena chiller rooms.

It certainly didn't stick, but it was officially recorded at YVR at 9 AM. The high today at YVR is about 5°C, mostly cloudy, but some sun today too.

I'm not sure how others made out but EC botched the big winter storm for us. We got maybe 3 cm of ice pellets rather than the 15-20 cm of snow they called for. Fine by me. There is another storm on the horizon for Friday however. Forecast is saying 5-10 cm at the moment.

-2C and mainly sunny today. Increasing cloud cover so it did cloud up towards the evening. Not bad as there was absolutely no wind.

Low of -5C (wind chill of -11) this morning.

The warmspot was Harrow, ON at 12.5C. Not a place out west for once.

Warmest low was Discovery Island, BC at 3.0C.

The storm is over, but the delays continue. K-12 schools in the city are closed, even Metrobus is out of service with an update at 9 a.m.

Waste/recycling collection is cancelled for the second consecutive day. That one's unsual. They often continue as normal even during a storm, let alone after one.

We had some light snow overnight. Nothing spectacular. Just enough to make the roads a little greasy on the morning commute.

Been a while since I've stepped foot on a snow rink. Had to almost waddle on the 1cm of iced over snow on the driveway.

I thought I had enough salt for the season. I not only shovel the driveway and brush the car for my elderly neighbour, I also salt. When she gave me a 20kg bag of salt a few weeks ago I thought, oh man, that's going to be a waste just sitting there. Nope! Been using quite a bit of salt this year.

I read Ontario has a shortage of salt. This despite having the world's largest salt mine. I saw it for the first time in Goderich back in October. Well, the outside at least. I didn't know at the time what I was looking at. I think it's funny that it's such a beautiful town with a unique spoked wheel town square and nice beach that are literally right next to the mine operations.

Anyway, a US company owns it and they the mine is contracted to supply a certain amount to the US and so logistically they are constrained from helping out the province they are located in.

Several Ontario cities are conserving their supplies of road salt due to what they say is a provincewide shortage.


Pickering and London recently issued notices advising they’re adjusting their winter maintenance operations due to the low supply of road salt, which comes as a cold snap settles in for large swaths of southern Ontario.

“Salt supplies are under pressure across the province,” Joel Gillard, division manager with road operations with the City of London, said in a Jan. 23 notice.

“Our teams are adapting to ensure roads remain as safe as possible with the materials we have available.”

Meanwhile, Pickering said rather than apply salt early in a storm, it may salt later when conditions allow it to be most effective.

“In some locations, a blend of salt, sand, or other de-icing materials may be used. This approach can improve traction and help extend available salt supplies; as a result, residents may notice more sand on roads and sidewalks,” the city said.

“These measures reflect practices being used across Ontario in response to current supply conditions. Winter operations will continue to be adjusted as needed based on weather, road conditions, and available materials.”

We only hit around 11C at the airport yesterday, but the warm front petered out right around the border, Detroit Metro was 17C, it’s almost never such a big temperature difference between the two airports.

Wow, I had no idea about Goderich - amazing photos and info! Thanks for sharing MegaD. Reading on Wikipedia it was hit by a destructive tornado in 2011.
