For comparison, - Seattle's "1 Line" LRT also is a bit faster than SkyTrain (Expo or Mill) [b]@45.5km/h), but has station spacing on average of 2.75km.
- REM (by my calculation) is 48.6km/h with 2.3km spacing
- EXPO is 43.5km/h (by my calculation) as it's 29km of track in 40 minutes.
According to the Surrey Extension site, Surrey to Langley will add 22 minutes over 16km of track... which won't change that average speed.
I honestly think they're being conservative with the Surrey Skytrain line, probably a case of underpromise, overdeliver. It would be amazing if they could advertise Langley to Waterfront in 59 minutes but that would need an average speed of 50km/h from Surrey to Langley which I think is pushing it.
Speaking of speed, I distinctly remember the Expo line being under 40 minutes. I seem to recall schedules saying it was 39 or 38 minutes. Am I imagining things? Or perhaps this is to account for increased capacity (doors opening longer) or building slack into the schedule? |
I echo your hope that this project will under-promise and over-deliver, that would be a nice change of pace for Canadian transit projects. Although, I think we've seen Vancouver do that before with the Canada Line (in terms of ridership and usefulness of the line, however with some critiques), and quite frankly the legacy Expo Line still seeing expansions and improvements shows that it also "over-delivered" in time.
In terms of Expo line speed, there were sections near Science World and through New West where the trains have been slowed down due to noise concerns. That's probably those extra couple minutes you're thinking of.
