Since the writing is on the wall for EK (and now apparently QR), I can see Etihad wanting to get ahead of them on an announcement, and YYC in the same boat wanting to get ahead of YVR with another major route announcement.

It would be pretty bad however if the rumours don't prove to be true and YVR ends up with nothing while YYC ends up with the only direct link between Western Canada and the middle east. Surely Etihad's launch will motivate Emirates and Qatar to launch YVR faster, right?
