"The greatest sandwich is the cold cut banh mi from Khánh Hòa in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I’m not sure how one small, nondescript Vietnamese deli came to create a sandwich unrivalled by the dozens of Vietnamese restaurants and delis across Canada I’ve visited since, but its enduring quality brings me back whenever I’m in the city. From the perfectly chewy baguette (make sure to ask for it not to be toasted) to the rich paté adorning its inner walls, this sandwich and its nestled ingredients of pickled carrots and daikon, cilantro (coriander), Thai chillis and an assortment of intriguingly patterned cold cuts will compel you to always buy two – one for immediate consumption and the second to enjoy later"

Yup, that place always has a line up. Especially at lunch. Always recommend ordering ahead because there will easily be 12 orders in queue ahead of you.

I always recommend the grilled beef, toasted. We always buy 1 or two and eat them during or after a good long hike.

Call me crazy but here's how I'd rank sandwiches that I've tried..

1. Jersey Mikes
2. Firehouse Subs
3. Hoagie Boyz / Primos
4. Jimmy Johns
5. Subway

Jersey Mikes I only tried once but it really blew my socks off.

Jimmy Johns was a huge let down, simply because it was so hyped up. Won't be going back there. I usually just get Firehouse subs.

Jersey mikes is good, but is terrible from a value perspective. Hoagie boyz is the real deal and sources as much as possible locally. Firehouse I didn’t care much for, maybe slightly above subway in terms of quality.

Went to Boogies on Main by Redwood last month. Prices were not bad. However, strange people solicited us outside, wanting change and money. Also waitresses were very slow and forgot about us, so I had to go up to the bar twice to ask about drinks and food. Would not recommend.

"Regular" sandwiches, Firehouse is top choice for the chain places.

There's a whole section of Vietnamese or Asian places I'd put overtop of the european sub style places.

Seconded. Haha I mentioned it earlier in the thread. Someone said it was written about in the Guardian as well. I tell people all the time "It's the one next to a shut down Massage Parlor, and if its beside a massage parlor, you KNOW its good"

Saw a post on FB that an Italian restaurant called Sottobraccio is going to be opening up in the Zu apartment block building. Open 9am -2am.

Yujiro is rebranding and reopening next Friday as "Peacock". Should be interesting to see what Chef Lam's cooked up. They're only open for dinner now, and no longer opening for lunch.

That's a shame. It was busy during lunch time. Reservations were required to get in.

Anyone know what happened with the Merchant Kitchen? Is it re-opening or is it done?

When they were originally closing, they announced that they were closing the doors, but that they'd be reimagining their menu. Whether it's at the same location, it's hard to say because I've driven past it several times and have seen no progress or movement on the inside. Their last call party was in July and it's been empty since. Maybe they're changing locations? but they've done super well there, so I'm not sure whats happening. Would have to ask the Gusto Restaurant group.

I thought the Merchant kitchen was going in the former grocery space in TNS.

That's what I thought, but I've seen zero sign of any activity in there related to a re-purposing into a restaurant.
