A new video game-inspired hotel coming to downtown Phoenix is inviting more players to get involved.

The Atari Hotel, an 11-story gaming, hospitality and entertainment destination planned for Roosevelt Row, is set to begin construction in 2026.
Inspired by the iconic video game brand, the $124 million project blends retro-futuristic design with immersive gaming and live events. Plans include an esports arena, a concert venue, interactive gaming spaces, a sportsbook, bars, restaurants and retail.

And now gamers and the general public can get involved. On Wednesday, developers detailed a public investment offering tied to the project first announced in 2020.

The Atari Hotel in Phoenix is targeting a mid-to-late 2028 opening after construction begins next year.

This appears to be the rear of the hotel as seen from the alley where Barcoa is. Do we know what will happen to the old radio station building? While I hope it will somehow be revitalized into something street facing, knowing Phoenix, we won't be so lucky.

New apartment building on the SWC of Portland and 1st St--looks like "a damp shoebox" as someone put it.

I heard from a reputable source the AMC owner wants to turn half of the screens into something more luxurious...whether this means like a dine-in theater is unclear.

There's another rendering I saw that shows the hotel taking up the radio station site. Looks like it will be demolished.

^ Yeah there's nothing historic left about the radio station building.

It's basically a 70s time warp in there with kitschy faux-Mexican details: fake wood/adobe, poop brown tile everywhere.

Phoenix apartment complex One Camelback expected to be finished in 2026

There’s an update on One Camelback:

Quote:
PHOENIX — A long-awaited central Phoenix apartment complex known as One Camelback will be completed in about a year, developers said.

“(The previous developers) were a long ways down the road,” TK Stratton, the CEO of developer Kinella Capital, told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s The Chris & Joe Show on Friday. “We’re making a few minor changes to some things.”

The Mesa-based boutique investment real estate firm took over the housing project, which is located off Central Avenue and Camelback Road, after it stalled during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These developers bought it for a good number, the market was going well, everything looked in line and they started going through the construction process,” Stratton said. “And during the time, we all know what happened with COVID and everything else. It just really hurt a lot of people in the construction industry. … A lot of people didn’t get paid and everything that went on with that.”

Is the theater somehow franchised and not owned by AMC itself?

They have an experienced GC selected, Brinkmann, who also did the Rosie.

Nice surprise to see this one eventually coming out of the ground and a massive gap filler for the Downtown/Midtown skyline.

So it's reasonable to believe it's realistic, but I'm not sure what the delays are for it going actually vertical.

Phoenix officials take step toward convention center expansion

Finally some movement/progress on this. Should know approach and next steps by March.

https://www.yourvalley.net/stories/phoen...oward-convention-center-expansion,642804

Quote:
Members of Phoenix City Council advanced efforts to expand the Phoenix Convention Center, including building an adjacent hotel, during a subcommittee meeting on Wednesday.

Vice Mayor Ann O’Brien, chair of the Economic Development and the Arts Subcommittee, requested city staff return in March with a presentation about next steps to take for the expansion.

Phoenix Convention Center Director Jerry Harper and Visit Phoenix President and CEO Ron Price reported the convention center is coming off a record summer, with the four largest events totaling 72,000 attendees.
However, they also detailed how many competing convention centers around the country have expansions funded and underway.

Councilmember Laura Pastor asked what would happen if the city does not follow suit in funding a convention center expansion.
“Cities will pass us up,” Price responded.

A particular weakness for the Phoenix Convention Center is the lack of hotel rooms near the center. Many companies view this unfavorably, Harper said, because it can bring the added expense of busing employees from the hotels to the convention.

A recent study from city staff found that an 800- to 1,200-room hotel is needed. However, Price said that estimate is outdated with how much demand for the convention center has grown, particularly with the success of Semicon West, a North American microelectronics exhibition, which Phoenix hosted for the first time in October.

“Our team would tell you we could use a lot more than 1,200 rooms,” Price said.

Semicon West will return to the city for 2027, and Phoenix officials hope to convince the convention to make Phoenix its permanent home, Harper said.
Visit Phoenix calculated the impact of the business the convention center lost from companies who listed lack of hotels as a reason to not host their event in Phoenix. They found 276 meetings and conventions were lost, accounting for 977,000 total attendees, 1.95 million hotel room nights and a direct spending of $1.5 billion.

However, Price did not mention if that business was lost or replaced by other meetings or conventions. Later in the meeting he mentioned he believes Phoenix has one of the highest occupancy rates for a convention center in the country, which makes it hard to schedule more meetings.

Harper noted the original South Building of the convention center, built in the 1980s, is only a single story, whereas the newer North and West buildings are several stories tall. He said an expansion could involve condensing the footprint of the South Building to be smaller but expanding the convention space by building vertically. The other portion of the property would then be used for a hotel that would connect to the convention building.

Another option Harper mentioned was a parking garage across the street from the West Building, which he said was probably not the best use for the property in the current business climate and could also be converted into a hotel.

Price said he is in constant contact with downtown hotel partners near the convention center who are eager to bid for one of the new hotel spaces.
“They are all waiting for this project,” Price said.

Harper brought up the most recent 2009 expansion of the Phoenix Convention Center, funded by both the city and the state. His staff calculated that without that expansion, the convention center would have had an economic impact since 2009 of $587 million instead of the $5.2 billion in actual economic impact the center has brought during that timeframe.

“It got us a seat at the table,” Harper said about the 2009 expansion. “And I think now we’re in a position, a unique position, to where we can move forward closer to the head of that table.”

Is there a reason why we lack so many hotel rooms? Needing that many rooms to be competitive with other big cities is shocking to me.

I assume this is a reference to the Hyatt Regency garage. I believe the city already has an RFP out for anyone interested in redeveloping that site.

Yep and NO ONE was interested LOL

Since it's a city owned parcel, any redevelopment must go through an RFP process correct? It's kind of weird for the PCC Director to make a comment like that and be clueless to the fact that the property has gone through TWO failed RFPs?

Banner Health moving corporate headquarters to Bond Phoenix

Well this is not ideal. Banner moving its HQ away from Phoenix Plaza to 32nd St and Camelback.

https://azbigmedia.com/real-estate/banner-health-moving-corporate-headquarters/

Quote:
Banner Health will relocate its corporate headquarters to Bond Phoenix at 3200 E. Camelback Road in Phoenix from Banner Corporate Center – Phoenix Plaza beginning in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The health system will occupy 67,000 square feet at Bond Phoenix, compared to the more than 304,000 square feet currently secured at Phoenix Plaza. The move reflects Banner Health’s ongoing commitment to financial stewardship by reducing administrative costs to better focus resources on its health care mission.

“By aligning our physical footprint with our hybrid work model, we are enhancing the workplace experience while maintaining our long-standing commitment to Phoenix,” said Staci Dickerson, Banner Health chief financial officer. “This decision demonstrates our commitment to being good stewards of our resources.”

Banner Health moved into Phoenix Plaza in 2015 when the location accommodated more than 1,000 team members working in-person full time. Moving to a flexible work strategy, the team members who come into the office daily significantly dropped. The new headquarters at Bond Phoenix will feature high-quality amenities, enhanced safety features and spaces designed to foster stronger team connection and collaboration.

Relocation will be completed in a phased approach to minimize disruption for Banner Health team members.
