I thought this would be simple but so far I haven't found a Dearden's on Hollywood Blvd. I found a location at 700 S. Main St. and another one at 6315 Pacific Blvd.

I watched this video at .25 speed and used the magnifier to see what I can identify. Lots of motels, motor lodges. Honey and olives at Powell's Place. Veedol (Flying A) Harbor Oil Products and Golden Eagle gas stations along with a Texaco, Standard and Mobil. General Aircraft is still in business since 1942. I suspect that's when the video was made probably before WW II. There looks like a lot of 1930's cars still on the road. Lots of diners many closed suggesting this movie was made either sometime before breakfast time or well after dinner about 9 PM? Gordon Duff Welding had many locations around Los Angeles. They were still around in 2015. The smoke from the train, shops with lights out and abundance of industrial locations and junk yards make this a noir treasure.

Not Hollywood Blvd. The Pacific Blvd, Huntington Park location is the right choice for you.

A mystery location for Saturday afternoon.

I thought we've seen this film negative on NLA but after doing a fairly quick search I don't believe we have. (surprisingly, 'Mixville' only brought up three measly previous posts)

Seller's description:..."1940s Photo Negative Grocery Store Los Angeles CA #8 Mixville Market"


Current on eBay $150.00

If you look closely -and adjust your eyeballs - you will see that it says Fitzsimmon's MIXVILLE MARKET on the front. (the negative is terribly over-exposed)


The reason it seemed familiar to me was the little Coca Cola cafe at lower right. (note that the photographer is standing on a hill behind the cozy little cafe) I bet he had a cheeseburger afterwards...

This photo is dated 1933, and pre-dates the "Fitzsimmon's" sign. It also includes a Van de Kamp's Bakery. The description gives the location as "the northeast corner of Silver Lake Blvd. and Glendale Blvd.".

Here's that corner in 1944 (Mixville Market at center). It wasn't there in 1927, so the image above may have been close to its opening. I looked up some of the buildings on the hill behind in e_r's photo using Google Maps and they match. The Mixville Market building was still there in 1952, but gone in 1964 (according to Historic Aerials).

One thing that caught my eye in the eBay photograph was this. (circled in red below)

As you can see it's quite small. The size made me think of the Photo-Instamatic places -but the eBay photo pre-dates anything like that.

So. . I thought it might have been an entrance to an underground pedestrian walkway.
BUT you'd think an underground crosswalk would have been built beneath the busier Glendale Blvd. (and not the smaller side street)


It's not an ice machine. There's one of those on the other end of the eBay picture. (did you sleuths notice it?)

If it isn't an entrance to an underground crosswalk what else could it be?

I'm thinking the round structure below the Mixville Market is a drive-in restaurant.

Martin Turnballs site has a post identifying it as Carpenter's Drive-In at the corner of Glendale & Silverlake Boulevards but that was updated to indicate that Carpenter's was at a different location which makes sense because the building in the photo does not have a round roof.

I searched for the location but only found this one example in the city directories.

We're looking north up N San Fernando Road from the corner of Roswell Street.Take a look on GSV. The building containing the Market Inn etc. has a build date of 1931, although it was modified in 1970. The address is 3075 N San Fernando Road. According to the 1956 CD, it was once another Fitzsimmon's store, and there was a Van de Kamps drive-in across the street at 3052.

The letterhead of this 1941 letter caught my eye because of the art deco building.

So imagine my surprise when I found out, not only is it still standing, it appears to be in pretty shape!

Also surprising, the rather tall pylon (for such a small building) is still in place despite 'earthquake' fears. ...(you wouldn't want it landing on top of your head)




Here it is once again. . . but at an angle similar to the illustration on the old letterhead.

If there aren't any lingering cancer-causing pesticides this would make a pretty good westside clubhouse for NLA, don't ya think

Here is another movie from the TYMO channel on youtube, an aerial view of Hollywood. Over the years I've viewed all the pages on this site back to page one and I don't recall seeing this before. My apologies if this is also a repost. I thought it was neat anyway-although the footage is mirror-imaged and is running backwards.
