As a River Heights straggler who saw tons of familiar Wolseley folk every time I stopped by the Beer Can last year, I can confirm the above to be true.

I know a guy who worked at the Beer Can around 2020-2022 and apparently the BC folks and the Granite club folks have had a few spats and their current relationship is uneasy. I don't know any more than that, but we've seen how unreasonable and shortsighted the Granite board has been. Wouldn't put it past them to cut off their nose to spite their face and turn the Beercan into a parking lot.

Not surprised by this, as there was rumblings from people I know in the industry that the Granite wasn't going to renew their deal with The Beercan and do their own thing because they saw how sucessful they were. Pretty sure they're on a year-to-year deal as far as I know.

The City really has the leverage here. I like in all of the City's responses to the press, one of the first thing they talk about is we need to "re-negotiate the lease" (which hasn't been re-negotiated in 7 years).

I know the City doesn't want to loose the Curling Club, but with the lease needing to be delt with, I would imagine that at any time until a new one is signed, the City could just say when the current lease year expires we will be looking for a new tenant. What could the Granite do in that case? It would be like when a tenant in Polo Park doesn't have their lease renewed...they can do nothing.

osborne village and west broadway have a huge presence there. if it's closer to wolseley you miss a lot of the osborne people who walk over, including myself

the current lease is month to month...don't even need to wait until the end of the year.

It's honestly one of the most insane things I've seen in local and provincial politics in my life....the Granite board's belligerence on the surface parking lot on land they don't own but collect revenue from. This is not revenue from operating of a curling club....this is revenue from day time parking for people who work at Canada Life on an adjacent surface lot owned by the City.

That board has zero leverage. They are fully dependent on subsidy (however they want to frame it, that's what it is) like getting that revenue from City land for daytime parking, tax deferrals, $1 rent on prime city land, City funding improvements to their club and the land that it sits on.

The City could easily sell that land to developers for tens of millions of dollars out from under them. And what incentive is the Granite giving them to not do that? Terrible negotiating position.

Was thinking on this the other day as I walked past the site.

If, as Christian said on the radio, the club is so pressed for parking because of high demand, that implies they have very good enrollment.

Also, looking at the current board members, they are not the same group of folks who might be running the Burton Cummings Community Centre. I mean, their Treasurer is a founder of a private capitol/family office outfit here in Winnipeg, Pierce and Turnbull just opened up a new multi-million dollar office for their insurance office on Corydon, and on and on.

Let's face it, the club has some well-heeled members, including people who are very capable of leveraging the capitol required to acquire the building and the land from the city and take it back into their own hands. But no, they'd rather keep suckling on the public teat like making demands for $800,000 a year in subsidies on top of free rent...

That Turnbull Insurance place was a home on the corner of Queenston and Corydon for years. They demolished a home when construction began for their new and much larger office, and now it has ruined one of my favorite childhood homes, as there is no privacy to it.

We have to do everything we can to bulldoze the Curling Club. They are a bunch of entitled assholes. I suggest on a weekend that we personally go there, and give them a taste of how the community feels about a bunch of rich old men screwing over vulnerable people who just want housing to survive..

Curling is a dead sport. 30 years ago, it was fairly lively but it's not going to survive.
