Wow! It's a real shaker in St. John's tonight! Very strong winds with temperatures below zero!

Started out sunny but is overcast now. Quite chilly too. In recent years December has felt like an extension of fall, that's definitely not been the case this year.

AND a flash freeze in the morning so everything was still ice. SO slippery walking to/from the bus.

I would like to know what you do and how you protect yourselves, the inhabitants of the Maritime Alps, during these freezing, stormy evenings

It's not common in areas like NYC though, and in the UK it's even less common. Part of the trope involves wishing for a white Christmas that doesn't always happen, however.

Europe does have somewhat shifted seasons with winter coming earlier, and some places there celebrate Christmas later. So a white Christmas would be pretty common in Eastern Europe and Russia.

White Christmas aside there is a sort of outdoor Christmas vibe involving evergreen trees, wreaths, holly, etc. that is more in line with what things look like in most northern cities around that time.
The idea came from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, 1843, and later from the song "White Christmas", 1940s, and the movie of the same name in 1954. I'm sure the popularity of Christmas cards, which dated from around Dickens' time helped the imagery a lot. Modern weather forecasting, Santa's sleigh and Rudolph, etc. were all part of this trope. As a celebration of Jesus' birth the timing is wrong, it should be in the spring; the Dec 25th date defers to the Pagan celebration of the solstice, and the lighted tree as a symbol of life in the midst of winter. Our modern version of Santa was largely popularized by Coca Cola as a marketing gimmick.
See that the Coke cooler is even prominent in this store interior Christmas display.

-8C with a wind chill of -12. Mix of sun and clouds. What the hell are those temperatures.

Low of -17C (wind chill of -24) this morning. 2 years ago, that was the coldest temperature all winter and now we get it before December 10th.

The warmspot were Victoria and Saanichton, BC at 12.5C.

Warmest low were Solander Island and Estevan Point, BC at 8.4C.

The hotspot was actually 13.2 at Victoria Airport. There is a weird glitch in the EC website where for a couple a hours after the day it will only show the hourly observational high and not the true high.

Awesome pics, Giallo!

Overcast, drizzly, damp, chilly. Thursday's high at Vancouver Harbour was 7 C, the low was 6 C.

Love this too, mcminsen!

Yeah, when temps hit below 2 degrees banana trees start to look haggard, at zero they get really haggard with lots of brown and black spots, and -2 is when they essentially die back entirely.

Coincidentally it was between -1 and -3 this morning in my area, so all the banana plants around here have now died back.

Well, outside of downtown, most people wouldn't walk the length of themselves so they likely still just drive everywhere for everything.

Downtown we walk in the middle of the street, and just move to the side if a car is passing by. It's not as dangerous as it sounds - speeds are slower, and drivers are very used to it.

Oh wow, how’d I miss that? It certainly didn’t feel that cold in the city yet but I guess it did out at the airport.

Was finally this afternoon able to turn the heat down a bit. The wind was keeping it chilly so I had them all turned up the past few days.

Well, I guess your driving school also includes lessons on how to drive in snowy, icy, and very windy conditions
