I thought the theater was showing The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit but if you look closely it says The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit....Was that a real movie!?

The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit was a 1968 Disney movie starring Dean Jones and Diane Baker. The title is a reference to the 1956 movie The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit. According to Wikipedia, it was originally paired with the animated featurette 'Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day' - the marquee just says "WINNIE POOH". The middle listing is for the 1968 movie Snow Treasure.

A reverse image search says it's actress/model Dolores Moran. That image seems to be quite prevalent online.

She was great in To Have and Have Not with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Exceptionally beautiful and statuesque woman.

Here's an interesting tidbit from her Wikipedia page:

In 1968, Moran was the recipient of bequest valued at $300,000 (equivalent to $2,712,632 in 2024).

Anthony Ponce, an apricot grower, bequeathed the bulk of his estate to her because he appreciated her kindness 20 years earlier when she worked as a carhop at a drive-in.

Miss Moran, now 41, said, “For the life of me, I cannot remember the man.”

I think behind the WELCOME sign are two large tents. The tent in the back could be the big one that held 4,000. Or, those two tents could be the cafeteria
and cook tents, with the big one somewhere else. Your photo seems to show all of the "half-dozen larger tents" that the August 3 article references.

This morning I happened upon three original photographs taken at Pickfair, Mary Pickford's estate.

They are being sold as a group on EBAY - one has the names written on the back, another has the names with on the front - and the third one has no names at all.

Seller's description:..."Rare Original Antique Photos Old Hollywood Pickfair Manor Party 1920-30 Pickford"

#1....Ping Pong anyone?




And here are the names.



Myrna Loy is pretty tall compared to the other women. (Pickford herself was only 5' 1") ..I'd like to learn more about the exotic Asian woman, Tai Lachman(?)

As you can see that's Jeanette Mac Donald on the right. . . but I can't read the names of the two women in the middle. (help please). The lady on the left is obviously the exotic Asian woman again. (she's so cool looking)

I recognize three of them but I have no idea about the other two.

I don't know the one on the right, but the three in the middle are also in the first photo with the names on the back: Grace Moore, Mary Pickford and Tai Lachman. On the left is Gloria Swanson.

The middle name Hope and a bit of just-vague-enough Googling gets me to Laura Hope Crews for the third woman. That's a reasonable interpretation of the handwriting and she was in her 50s in the mid-1930s. Lots of images of her available online, not least because she was in Gone With the Wind.

I'm still working on #2 but the last name reads like Kelly to me. But that first letter might not be a K.

I'm pretty sure Hollywood had two ice skating rinks (and there was a huge one in Westwood), but I highly doubt we can figure out which rink -in Hollywood- this one is.

When NLA discussed the Polar Palace located at 613 N. Van Ness Ave. in Hollywood, which was also used in some movies, as well as the Ice Capades and for UCLA and USC Men's Hockey from 1934-1938, there were very few photos found of it except when it caught fire and burned down in 1963. In fact, if it hadn't burned down it seems there'd be hardly any photos of it around. But a couple of those photos does show it had a sign, like the one shown in the above photo.

Polar Palace began its life in 1928 as Glacier Palace, a huge barn of a wooden structure at at 613 N. Van Ness Avenue between Melrose Avenue and Clinton Street. The rink would be renamed the Winter Garden some years later. In 1934, it reopened as the Polar Palace.

I've been looking for an illustrated Map Of Hollywood from the 1930s that shows the Polar Palace. I can clearly see it in my mind's eye.
The map was posted on NLA many years ago. Does annyone remember it?

My guess is one of the rear windows of the Security Trust and Savings Building on the corner of Hollywood and Cahuenga Boulevards. Here's as close as I could get to duplicating the view (the Security Trust and Savings Building is in the lower left corner).
