Hopefully to settle the debate/add some non-fantasy speculation about a northern Canada Line extension, this was analysed in some depth in the 2020 Burrard Inlet Rapid Transit study.

https://news.gov.bc.ca/files/9-15_Burrard_Inlet_study.pdf#page=29

Option 1A explored a spur off of the Canada Line after Yaletown-Roundhouse and was deemed unfeasible.

Option 2A explored lowering Vancouver City Centre and Waterfront in order to tunnel beneath the harbour. This was not considered unfeasible, but only basic analysis was done.

I never said anything about extending north. I said the Canada Line trains can do a 25 meter radius turn, which would allow the Canada Line to turn underneath Cordova Street, either east or even west, even with the concrete barrier underneath Cordova, you can still make that turn. The Canada Line Waterfront station is far enough south on Granville street, that you could leave the station intact. You would only have to tie into the tail tracks that run a bit past the station.

Biggest constraint is OMC space with any extension north, would it not be? Current one is pretty limited in available space.

Even if the Canada Line could make a sharp U-turn (it can't), the passengers won't want to either. That means a rebuild of Waterfront (and possibly City Centre), which automatically makes it a non-starter.

As long as the private sector takes all the costs, no problem. The last study estimated half a billion (edit: just for Senakw-Science World; the full Arbutus-Waterfront route was a full billion), which has no doubt increased since then, for what amounts to R1 ridership.

I'm on the 31 right now on my way home and there are two standing passengers with a bus full sign. It's definitely time for a regular bus to be on this route

Up to 1,100 buses, about 70 per cent of the fleet and double from 2024, will be operating with Michelin Grip D tires this upcoming season. These tires have a deeper tread pattern and, like the fleet’s other tires, also carry the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake rating — the highest winter rating available for bus tires. Testing over the last three years has shown Grip D tires perform better in snowy and rainy weather, but are still reliant on road conditions. Coast Mountain Bus Company will continue transitioning the entire fleet to these tires.

The project will test lights at 14 locations where customers or staff have identified a need for improved lighting. The initiative will improve visibility for both Bus Operators and waiting passengers — helping customers feel safer and more visible when travelling at night or in the early morning.

“This initiative is part of our commitment to improve the customer experience through innovation,” says TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn. “We’ve heard from riders that lighting makes a big difference at bus stops, and this pilot will help us explore how solar technology can make waiting for the bus safer and more comfortable.”

The new lights:

Illuminate at the push of a button located on the bus stop pole
Use LED bulbs powered by a solar panel
Are developed by BC-based company Urban Solar

Right, I was looking for where I had seen it before and didn't see it on the streetcar thread. Thanks for clarifying that you had posted it first.

This is exactly what we were discussing -- bad transit service will either lead people to drive and choke the neighbourhood with parked cars, or it will turn people off from going to games, which is not good for the team.

This might inadvertently become a test case for what needs to be done to ensure people have options to get to and from events, and the status quo is clearly not sufficient. Obviously, the team needs to advocate to TransLink and this isn't necessarily a "TransLink is to blame" thing, but it's still disappointing to see the lack of coordination and organization.

The obvious answer is a Hastings SkyTrain... by 2050.

Between then and now, I don't see many good options beyond bus lanes for the R5.

The Burrard Area Transit Plan had "Route K" from the discussion guide linked here:

Quote:
New express service between 29th Avenue Station and Phibbs Exchange in North Vancouver along Renfrew St and the Second Narrows Bridge.
This should help for transit access from the Expo / Millennium line since the current 16 service is brutal especially for events at the PNE.

The city also needs to progress a master plan for the PNE/Hastings Park and have some kind of pedestrian spine across the grounds to link up the Coliseum, the Arch and Playland. Then the North Shore BRT could have a stop implemented at Bridgeway St to service the fairgrounds. (Obviously this should become a Skytrain station too whenever that would happen).

Once the Broadway line+Langley like open how much buss service will be gained back?

And

If the Burnaby Gondola goes ahead how much bus service will be gained.

And

If they get the UBC finally build how much bus service will be gained.

Broadway subway should see increases to 9 service levels, so a draw on 40 foot buses and a little relief on 60 foots from truncated 99 service.

Burnaby Gondola should see relief on the 40 foots used on the 145 as that route will be eliminated (5 buses being used on that route right now I can see from the T-Comm), would expect these to cover the increase on the 9.

Langley extension will eliminate the 503 (9 x 40ft buses being used right now for that route), and will see some better efficiencies on other routes. But overall should drive the need for more routes and service increases that will require more than 9 spare 40ft buses.

UBC extension, in theory you'd get all the 99 60ft buses back to use on other routes (less whatever is reallocated from the broadway subway opening). There's 23 of those running right now, so that should be a big uplift to any rapidbus routes in need at the time (likely R4/R5).

That's a bright idea. I hope it is successful and can be rolled out as part of standard bus stop design going forward.

Just reading on London (ON) Transit's plans to add this to all their bus stops

Quote:
Item 12.7 on the Commission’s 2023 Work Program calls for the implementation of solar-powered lights at 150 bus stop locations across the city. This project is intended to improve the safety and accessibility of bus stops that have been identified as having low light or safety concerns. The lights are activated by pushing a button on the bus stop pole, after which they remain illuminated for 10 minutes. The light is designed to light the area immediately adjacent to the bus stop location, improving the sense of safety for customers and making it easier for bus operators to see customers waiting at the stop. Should the light be required for longer than 10 minutes, the button can be pushed again.
It's like $2320 for each stop

Cheaper than running conduit. That's great to hear about London.
