It's not whining. It's about letting YQM become everything that it could be. There is still a lot of potential there for YQM, especially as the city grows.
But, I am a realist. There are only a small handful of hub cities in the country, and this is never going to change. This includes Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver and Halifax. I'm cool with that.
There is a second tier of cities however that offer a limited number of international and sun destination flights, frequently on a seasonal basis. This includes cities like St. John's, Quebec City, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and to a lesser degree Victoria, Kelowna and Saskatoon. I think Moncton could belong on this tier.
YQM already offers seven destinations in four countries on two airlines in the Caribbean and Mexico on a seasonal basis (I just checked). I honestly do think that seasonal direct flights to Europe during the summertime could be a possibility (especially to Paris with the Acadian connection).
The airport is growing. We have expanded our long term parking, replaced our loading bridges, expanded our deicing capabilities, and. there are further expansion plans for the terminal (including enlarging the departures lounge, increased post security amenities and a third loading bridge).
Finally, as we have recently discovered, there are plans for an airport hotel and restaurant valued at nearly $19M.
We will never be YHZ, but, we can aspire to have a top quality, convenient and versatile airport for the central Maritime region.
