It's not just politicians it's bleeding heart lefty judges too

I lived in the downtown eastside in '92-'93 and was the victim of numerous crimes so i can't even imagine what it's like now but i'll bet prison is safer

I recall several decades ago, the Guardian Angels being called in to keep order in the New York subway, after a spate of brutal crimes there. I wonder how they made out.

They seem to still be around, they also expanded and apparently Vancouver has had a chapter since 2006.

There was a chapter in the late 1980s, that faded away after about 5 years. It was revived in 2006, and by 2011 there were 10 active members. The group seems to have disappeared not long after that. One of the people involved in reviving the group in 2006 talked about starting it up again last year, but nothing seems to have happened as a result.

I guess that group quietly disappeared. Nowadays we have stuff like creepcatcher and stuff like that.

The downtown east side has been a problem for the last 30 years (if not longer). There have been multiple attempts by liberal and conservative leaning governments to fix the problem. Yet we are where we are.

Yeah keep your head on a swivel, walk like you think people are following you around I say. I commute from downtown to work during the early morning when the streetlights are on, a few times I've taken the bus at the stop up the road because of rough looking people at my usual stop.

New data from the Vancouver Police Department suggests the rate of violent crime is falling since the beginning of the year.

A report going to the Vancouver Police Board Thursday says that the decline is so substantial, these are the lowest numbers in more than 20 years.

“Total crime decreased by 0.9% in Q1 2025 compared to Q1 2024, from 10,012 to 9,921 crimes,” the report stated.

“Violent crime declined by 11.2% in Q1 2025 compared to Q1 2024, with the number of cases dropping from 1,342 to 1,192 – the lowest number of violent crimes on record in Vancouver going back to the implementation of PRIME in 2002.”

Pollution and garbage have a hugely detrimental effect on livability. We should have a thread for that too. Moreso than the general crime thread.

Doesn't seem like she has any criminal record.

There's no way they could be another ICE because ICE isn't a vigilante group, they're a government agency, the acronym stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They sound so cold though, they'd probably be more popular if they changed the acronym to National Immigration and Customs Enforcement

Missing the point entirely - these days, the people who'd sign up to be Guardian Angels are more likely to be thugs and wannabes themselves rather than Good Samaritans.
