Any designated heritage building that is vacant for more than 5 years in a row should be expropriated and sold to someone willing to develop the property (looking at you St. Charles Hotel). The City is willing to expropriate houses that people live in on Kenaston to widen the road but won't expropriate vacant heritage building? Like c'mon.

How about perfectly good houses that are snapped up for redevelopment, go through all of the permitting processes and then lay fallow for years for ... reasons?

Good-sized house on a double lot on Corydon that should have been a 4-plex by now but hasn't seen any movement in the 2 years since they were given the green light. But hey, we're in a housing crisis, right?

Noticed some work going on at 168 Bannatyne.
New windows going in and an extra storey being added.
I forget if we've seen renders or talked about this development here.

There was a render that was not approved way back in the 2000s because it was all glass and added a penthouse on the top of it. They've been building on the roof since spring. Interesting to see how they clad it.

There was some info posted on SSP in more recent times about this. Possibly a clerks report.

I looked at a few times as we own the Ryan Building next door.

Not sure what to do with it.

I imagine it would be a teardown for whomever decides to pull the trigger. Wasnt it in rough shape even like 10 years ago when it closed? I cant imagine sitting empty for a decade has helped things.

Its ugly, dirty, in rough shape, and I never went to it but something about the Towne 8 makes me wish we could preserve it. Like its SO Winnipeg in a way I can't really explain.

Its indicative of the centennial Brutalist architecture that is slowly disappearing across the city. There is a certain charm to the style but I guess concrete bunkers/pillboxes arent too appealing for preservation efforts haha.

I think it's an ugly building, hope it gets demolished. Large blank walls and only one entrance, totally kills street life.

Oh I agree, I hope its torn down. The footprint is large enough you could build a real cool plaza there.

Better an empty concrete bunker than a surface parking lot.

I don’t know if we need a plaza kitty corner from the new plaza next to the Burt.

It could be a good sized 6-7 storey mixed use or taller and really tie the exchange and the Burt/Yellowdog area together

Agreed, would like to see a roughly 5-8 story mixed-use building go in there.
