I mean there's sort of a nice view so it's better than a random wheel plunked in the middle of the city. Agreed that it should be on the long pier at the Shipyards like they contemplated with when they were building it.

I get why it's downtown. Near the cruise ship terminal, a view of the city and the mountains.

Personally, I too have never quite understood the appeal of Ferris wheels in urban settings. They strike me as more carnival attraction than civic contribution—an spectacle that is unable to speak to the soul of any great city.

When I walk through a public space, I want to feel a sense of place—something rooted in the local culture, history, or landscape. A Ferris wheel, no matter how flashy or tall, often feels like a placeholder for something more meaningful. It takes up valuable space without giving much back.

I’d rather see public art or architecture that tells a story—something that invites people in, reflects the city’s character, and adds lasting value.

Too many urban planners were enthralled with The Third Man apparently.

I'm not a big fan of having it at Canada Place it just encourages tourists on cruises to stay at the pier rather than go into the city.

In Paris, some years back, they put a huge ferris wheel right up neat the western end of the Tuilerie Gardens facing onto the expanse of Place de la Concorde, with its fountains, obelisk, and lighting. Talk about a hodge-podge of clashing designs !! French elegance went out the window that time!

Tell that to the cruise ship passengers just take a bus after their cruise finishes and head for the airport. I doubt people are going to spend all day at Canada Place because there's a ferris wheel.

Would you prefer an observation tower?* They add nothing over an observation wheel save for telecoms and sometimes a restaurant, yet often end up being the heart of their city's skyline and culture.

*(Genuine question. The Granville Island Elevator needs to happen yesterday.)

The Granville Island elevator is just too good of an idea to happen any decade soon.

Vancouver's own little SFU Gondola.

It looks like ALign Architecture (who have designed the Goh Ballet tower on Main near Broadway) also designed a potential replacement for BIG's office that's no longer going to be built on the Steam Plant. It's described as conceptual, 48 storeys, Residential, Hotel, Retail, Data Center, Energy Center.

The BCUC documents for Creative Energy mentioned they were doing the work on the new application so probably is new.

The architect worked at Westbank/James Cheng before starting her own practice.

Looks like all mechanical for data centre cooling.

It's boxy, awkward, and homely looking. It's an example of a latter-day "Vancouver Special." Too bad elegance is not emphasized in building plans, especially at street level, not in Vancouver, anyway.

At least a data centre won't complain about the bright lights at BC Place.
The hotel and condo seem to be higher up, so would just complain about noise.
The breezeways look awkward on existing foundations, no doubt.
The circular restaurant pavilion is still there in shadow.

Councilors had meetings with Serve Robotics (food delivery by robots) so maybe we'll see them here soon? One of the co-founders is from Vancouver.

Quote:
On a quiet street in North Vancouver, two delivery robots sit parked in a garage. They’re leftovers from a Pizza Hut pilot project—a reminder that, while Ali Kashani spends much of his time in Silicon Valley scaling one of the world’s largest autonomous robot fleets, Vancouver is still home.

“From is a vague word,” he tells me. “But if you ask me where’s home? It’s Vancouver. This is where my house is. This is where my family is.”

For Kashani, the answer is both literal and symbolic. He has built a company—Serve Robotics—that operates in Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles, and soon Atlanta. The business went public on NASDAQ last year, has raised roughly $300 million, and is on track to scale to 2,000 delivery robots by the end of 2025. Yet he speaks with equal conviction about moving back to Vancouver full-time next year.

Councilor had a meeting for a new hotel development Radisson/Cambria (if it's only one brand I assume it'll be Cambria) in Vancouver.

I'm looking forward to Vancouver's junkie population interacting with food delivering robots....

Another councillor calendar item that seems to be with the architect below

Totem Tower Proposal at Central Waterfront

https://www.skkarchitecture.com/projects/residential

I don't think it's related to any of those concept real/fake with the Totem Tower name if you search for it.
