Honestly, I think this institutional white cladding is chosen because it's the cheapest. I don't see the appeal otherwise. It makes almost every building look like a detention centre.

Is it common to see construction laborers working on projects like this on the weekends? I saw people installing windows on both Saturday and Sunday when I drove past.

It’s not common per se but certainly not wildly unusual. The glazing contractor is probably motivated to be finished before the deep freeze to maximize profits, or landed too many contracts and has to hustle hard to meet.

Given that it is now September, I wouldn't blame them either. Mariah is already thawing, and having the glazing up as quickly as possible is essential.

Anyone heard anything recently about The Onyx Phase 2? Been awhile since this was proposed and haven't heard about it for a long time, but Ironclad still has the proposed development up on their website.

surprised they're not moving on this. that building has 250+ units and it looks from their website that they only have 3 vacancies ($1547 to $2328). seems like it would be easy to fill the second phase

Man, that whole plaza area has become so high density- although unfortunately in a vary car-centric way.

Agreed! Hopefully the area develops to become more pedestrian/active transpo friendly, but the saving grace is that whole block is a 5-15 min walk to the RT station. They really need to fix the sidewalk/road that leads to that RT station. It looks like a warzone/back alley road with all the pot holes and the condition that the parking lot in front of 8KKM Karaoke.

Once they do add Phase 2 of The Onyx, they will need to at least consider a traffic light at that intersection of Adamar and Pembina, as it pains me to say.

They have been battling the City for a couple of years now over rezoning. I believe they are still hoping to start in 2026.

The whole Pembina strip has a ton of potential and we gotta get rid of those dirt lots next to the transit station. Everything south of Chevrier should be zoned Commercial mixed-use and the city should do everything they can to line that strip behind the transitway with housing. I will not rest until that area looks like Tokyo or at least one of its sleepier neighbourhoods lol.

The old auto dealership at 715 Pembina Hwy (Pembina at Jackson) left and the property was sold. Construction fencing is up and permits have been issued for a new restaurant. It seems that the new owner is Fuller Group which I think owns A&W. So my best guess is that a new A&W is going in.

Permits:
25-243222 EC 715 Pembina HWY Wire New Building. Related Building Permit: 25-177127 PE. Wire new A&W Building Issued 2025-10-21
25-238495 PC 715 Pembina HWY Plumb New Building. Related Building Permit: 25-177127 PE. Location of work within building - room number, floor, etc.: Main Floor. Install Plumbing and drainage for new restaurant. Issued 2025-10-09
25-237955 EC 715 Pembina HWY Other Electrical. Related Building Permit: 25-177127 PE. Supply and Install Control Devices. Issued 2025-10-09
25-236794 MC 715 Pembina HWY M3 - Defined High Hazard. Related Building Permit: 25 177127 000 00 PE. Location of work within building - room number, floor, etc.: kitchen. New install - buckeye fire suppression system Issued 2025-10-20
25-214376 EC 715 Pembina HWY Additional Wiring. Wire temp service for construction purposes Issued 2025-08-25
25-177127 PE 715 Pembina Highway Construct New. "Concurrent Building Permit Submission" (Related DP: 25-158940 DP). Construct a 1 storey, 214 sqm commercial building (Restaurant) Issued 2025-09-29
25-158940 DP 715 Pembina Highway Permit. FULLER GROUP LTD. - Construct new single-story commercial building to establish a new restaurant measuring a 212 square meters. Issued 2025-09-29

It says A&W in the text of the permits.

As much as we need more transit orientated development, the Blue line already feels well over capacity during peak periods which is sad. Adding thousands of more people along the line will be a good thing in general, but Transit will need to find a way to add busses to the line. Getting passed up by full articulated buses once or twice at 7:45 AM on a "high frequency" line when it's -35 is one of the quickest ways to convince people not to take transit and just drive instead.

We should be excited that the rapid transit line has been a general success, but also concerned that it seems over capacity already.

Today in the CBC the ATU pres said they had lost 18 drivers just last month (IIRC?). The fleet itself is very old, many of our buses are secondhand from Ottawa and other municipalities, they're all different models which makes maintenance harder, and Transit is direly short on maintenance space.
