Photos of the doomed Lisbon funicular two weeks before it crashed

Cirrus' Portugal Summer
Preface: The doomed Lisbon tram
Stop 1: Lisbon
Stop 2: Óbidos
Stop 3: Coimbra
Stop 4: Porto
Stop 5: The non-glamorous central province

Soooo I was in Lisbon two weeks ago and rode the famous Elevador da Glória, which crashed and killed 16 people on Wednesday.

Here it is. It was wonderful.

This is the exact tram that crashed.

I'm basically standing where it hit the side of the building.

He traded in cheesecake factory for whole foods

On a serious note, what a horrific crash on an historic tram, an icon of Lisbon and Portugal itself.

They started to operate that funicular / cable car in 1885 and say no crash like that had ever happened before.
Locals would take it as a tragedy.
I wouldn't like to be in the shoes of the subcontractor in charge of maintenance...
Guess investigation will tell who's responsible for the mess.

Beautiful piece of functional transportation.

My heart goes out.

yeah we were on it in june -- its so heartbreaking.

you just never know about these tragic events -- for example i had friends that had tix on the 1980s lockerbie bombing plane, but changed their plans day before thank god. i think about that one a lot.

as for us one time we were the very first plane in to istanbul after the airport bombing -- there was still glass and a mess in that area --
and then at the end of the same trip we were literally in taksim square the morning of the fake coup and then last plane out in the afternoon when it was underway --
when we got home we saw tanks rolling in the square and saw they had crushed a stand where we bought our goddaughter gifts that very morning. yeesh.

this kind of horrible accident is really triggering.

Some folks are getting fired and may even be criminally negligent. A terrible tragedy indeed. Portuguese and tourists from IIRC 9 different countries perished on that tram.

I was a few blocks away at another funicular on the other side of town a few weeks ago as well. Quite surreal what has happened and sad that so many people died.

Thanks for sharing your experience, and glad you weren't there when it happened.
