Totally agree. Likely why they moved out of neighbourhoods that would be more union friendly.

I personally have no moral qualms about eating there. I just felt that the prices had gone up disproportionally to other places.

I know a bunch of people who were working in the WPG restaurant industry during the Union drive, and they all said Stella's was a notably bad employer, granted that was some time ago. Ask a bartender about it, I'm sure they'll be able to tell you something about how it is these days.

That is not at all what I have ever said. People like you claim that unionization is impossible in restaurants which has repeatedly been proven as factually incorrect.

The hard truth is if any employer treats their employees fairly with dignity and respect they aren't going to unionize every, see Costco. If have to really go out of your way to be a horrible employer to get employees to pass a unionization vote as that takes 50% or more of your employees to agree.

Drove by Mae Sunee Thai restaurant recently (formerly Cafe Dario) and saw all the windows boarded up. Heard good things about the place, but never had the chance to go. Sad to see another Thai restaurant close.

Edit, just learned their building was also a victim of arson in July. I wonder if this is in connection with the attempted arson at Thida Thais. What's going on in this city? Smh

The Tim Hortons on Portage near Wall is another union shop.

And again, if you cannot treat your employees fairly with dignity and respect and a union contract, which is not uncommonly near minimum wage, forces you out of business, then you failed as a business owner longer before your employees unionized.

The process to get a union certification is a work place is not trivial so you truly need to go out of your way to have employees viewing that as a viable path forward.

No idea. Not sure this was mentioned previously but Jimmy John's is also taking over the old Subway location at Broadway between Carlton and Edmonton. Windows are wrapped with logo and coming soon messaging.

Stella's doesn't but tons of restaurant/bar staff across the city know each other lol, I just said bartenders cause they'll probably have more time to chat with customers.
