I usually could care less about what these small infill buildings look like, but this one is pretty bad.

It looks okay from the front but its butt is ugly and it looks like it will continue to be in full view unless the businesses behind it get redeveloped.

Agreed with urbanlife. The backside by the neighboring parking lot looks pretty bad IMO. But the rest of it (while wacky) isn't bad lol. I'm just glad to see more housing on such a small lot.

It's architectural malpractice. Plopping this crap into any residential neighborhood naturally creates NIMBY attitudes.

Literally anything can cause this.

It looks like a building you’d see in The Sims.

Honestly, it's not the worst single lot infill developments that I've seen. Some of them crowd the front of the building with gas meters and/or electrical panels. You would think the city could require those to be screened or at least placed on the side. However, I've never seen such odd fenestration.

Indeed.

It’s a cool view driving south on 21st, as you near multnomah. The new condos on the right (the Payton?), and this new building overlooking 21st, gives a neat urban city feel imho.

Via Portland Maps, a Pre-Application Conference has been scheduled for a site at NE MLK and Alberta:

Quote:
Proposed development to include 5 levels of new residential units, inclusive of interior amenities, above ground floor use as intended to be a grocery, surface level and below-grade/subterranean parking to be included as a supportive function of the grocery and residential uses. All loading and maneuvering associated with loading to be handled on site and within the parameters of the site.
The site is opposite the Alberta Commons, which is anchored by Natural Grocers. The development was originally going to include Trader Joe's, but they pulled out after the development became a symbol of the gentrification of N/NE Portland.

I assume they have a tenant in mind, and I'm curious who it is. Trader Joe's has been expanding in the region a lot, but I'd be very surprised if they want to try that specific intersection again. The only other retailer I can think of that is expanding, and doesn't have a nearby store, is Market of Choice.

The site appears to be owned by "Sortis Alberta", so I'm guessing this property falls in the Sortis Capital asset bucket. Sortis has a long track record of financial mismanagement and buying/destroying local portland businesses, so I hope this project actually has some legs to it. That site desperately needs something lively and new.

Seems bizarre they’d plan another grocery right across the street, but I guess the more competition the better.

I thought Natural Grocers went into the site that was going to be TJs? Which was extremely ironic in that battle since Natural Grocers is far more expensive that TJs but didn't carry the same "gentrification" threat.

I hope we've moved beyond the vibe heavy, evidence light discourse that led to this incident. But I think less reported criticism that PDC should have tried for a mixed use project with housing holds up. If we ended up with a Trader Joes with housing above it at this intersection it would be pretty poetic.

Also good for them for putting parking below grade. A lot of urban grocery stores have done some pretty awkard configurations to avoid underground parking

This site is across the street from natural grocers on the northeast corner of MLK and Alberta. If I recall correctly another issue with the natural grocers site was that there was a large pipe down the middle of the property making a mixed use development harder.

Are we sure it's not the same lot? There is press from that time where it says Natural Grocers replaced TJs in that development.

The way I quoted the previous post made it confusing. I was referring to the new development. Yep, Natural Grocers replaced the Trader Joe’s.
